Administrators Gail Posted June 24, 2015 Administrators Posted June 24, 2015 Stumbling on this the other day... I didn't realize how limited Bibles are when translating this word. Would love to share these thoughts on the meaning of chaçed and hopefully expand our understanding on this most important word. These are taken from The New Strong's Expanded Dictionary of Bible Words. I am getting to like this volume. It's like the Amplified version of Strong's Concordance. Chaçed, as a noun, means, "loving-kindness; steadfast love; grace; mercy; faithfulness; goodness; devotion." Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted June 24, 2015 Author Administrators Posted June 24, 2015 (edited) 1) this word is used 240 times in the Old Testament, and, 1a) is especially frequent in the Psalter 1b) The term is one of the most important in the vocabulary of Old Testament theology and ethics. When I read this, I wonder how on earth people can ignore the Old Testament, saying that it is full of violence or that it is the Old Covenant? Apparently the Old Testament people had an understanding of grace. Apparently the Old Testament people had an understanding of grace. Absolutely. It was no accident that Jesus chastised Nicodemus for not understanding the new birth. Administrators Gail Posted June 27, 2015 Author Administrators Posted June 27, 2015 In general, one may identify three basic meanings of the word, which always interact: "strength," "steadfastness," and "love." Any understanding of the word that fails to suggest all three inevitably loses some of its richness. "Love" by itself easily becomes sentimentalized or universalized apart from the covenant. Yet "strength" or "steadfastness" suggests only the fulfillment of a legal or other obligation. Note- bold emphasis mine. To me this sounds like the "how" and "why" of grace and mercy. That is why translating chaçed as mercy is not enough to grasp the depth of meaning. I think I was shortchanging myself all these years! Praise God that His love is even larger than I ever knew! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

These are taken from The New Strong's Expanded Dictionary of Bible Words. I am getting to like this volume. It's like the Amplified version of Strong's Concordance. First I need to ask: Is this suppose to be a Hebrew word? Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Administrators Gail Posted June 27, 2015 Author Administrators Posted June 27, 2015 (edited) According to Strong's, it is H2617 Edited June 27, 2015 by Gail Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted June 27, 2015 Author Administrators Posted June 27, 2015 Pete, start with Psalm 107:1, with that common saying, Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endures for ever. the CJB has it, "for his grace continues forever." It is that word translated, grace, or mercy in the KJV, that interested me. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members phkrause Posted June 27, 2015 Members Posted June 27, 2015 OK, so now I have that. The problem I'm having is I did a search on all the Jewish websites, and nowhere do I find the word "chaçed." So that's why I ask. So I'll ask it this way, where did you see this word? Because as far as I know, the way your spelling it, it doesn't seem Hebrew to me. With that little squigly(sp) under the second"c!" No Hebrew words have that, as far as I know. Naomi 1 Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Administrators Gail Posted June 27, 2015 Author Administrators Posted June 27, 2015 It's in the Strong's just like that, perhaps as a pronunciation help. I know how to pronounce that letter. Did you find the Hebrew spelling? You could use that as your starting point. i would love to read your input, from a Jew's perspective. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members phkrause Posted June 27, 2015 Members Posted June 27, 2015 I unfortunitely don't have my books with me. They are still in storage in Massachusetts. In the back of the CJB there is a glossary section, I believe the word is in there. But not with that spelling. I just downloaded the Bible to my grandsons ipad and am going to look and see if I can find it. There is also a book written on Ruth that uses the word and there is a definition of it. So will get back to you when I find what I'm looking for. I could be wrong all together of what I'm thinking. Wont be the first or last time for sure. Gail 1 Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members phkrause Posted June 27, 2015 Members Posted June 27, 2015 (edited) OK here is what I was thinking: http://www.hebrew4christians.com/Meditations/Chesed/chesed.html Now I see why I couldn't get around the spelling they had in the concordance you mentioned and that little wiggle under the "c" really got me. LOL Also if I'm not mistaken, in the book about Ruth the spelling was also different. I believe it was spelt: "Hezed," but not positive. Administrators Gail Posted June 28, 2015 Author Administrators Posted June 28, 2015 Wonderful! Looking forward to more... Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted June 28, 2015 Author Administrators Posted June 28, 2015 3) The word refers to mutual and reciprocal rights and obligations between the parties of a relationship (particularly Yahweh and Israel). 3a) But chaçed is not only a matter of obligation, 3b) it is also of generosity. 3c) It is not only a matter of loyalty, but also of mercy 3d) The weaker party seeks the protection and blessing of the patron and protector, but he may not lay absolute claim to it. 3e) The stronger party remains committed to his promise, but retains his freedom, especially in regard to to the manner in which he will implement those promises Rights? Obligations? Loyalty? It sounds like an active, vibrant relationship to me! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
