A Friend is Someone Who...

If you've ever taken the time to see Who's Online and actually read the things that they are reading, one of the subjects that is frequently viewed by anonymous viewers is the subject of friendships. The thread is titled, "What is a friend?" There is another thread that is frequently viewed--it is about a subject that can be found in Unusual Statements (and is viewed about twice as often as the "Friend" thread).

I'm not certain why these two are among the most frequently viewed topics, but they are.

So, in the interest of people who still are wondering,...

A friend is someone who believes in you.

A friend is someone who listens.

A friend is someone who loves you just the way you are.

A friend is someone who knows all about you and loves you anyway.

A friend is someone who gives: trust, respect, appreciation, time, energy, and assistance (among other things). The first draft of this specified these things were mutual but at second thought I don't think mutual friendship is required, so I rewrote it. As an example, God was (is) a friend to us even when we aren't there for Him.

What do you mean? Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good on this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?

On a purely human level I might be able to accept this up to a point. But as a disciple of Christ there appears to be something more to friendship than meets the obvious. I'm satisfied John the Baptist was a friend of Jesus. Likewise

the scripture seems to indicate Jesus to be Friend of whoever accepts His friendship.

[:"red"] "No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you." [/] John 15:15 NKJV

[:"red"] "And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?" [/] Luke 7:19 KJV

[:"red"] "Having been prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." [/] Matthew 14:8 NASB

[:"red"] "And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother." [/] Matthew 14:11 NASB

[:"red"] "I assure you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist." [/] Matt 11:11 NLT

MG and Amelia,

It's funny how our minds play tricks on us. When I first read the words, "will help you bury the body," my reaction was one of, "Yes! How true!" But, I wasn't thinking about having done the crime--was thinking more along the lines of a friend...helping another to bury the body of a deceased loved one (i.e., a spouse, a son, a mother, a father)--someone to be there for you at your most vulnerable moments and hold you up!

And, in that moment, I think of a friend as being more as an extension of self, rather than an "accessory."

Ceth and LHC,

"Likewise the scripture seems to indicate Jesus to be Friend of whoever accepts His friendship."

When we introduce someone (or refer to them in conversation) as a "friend of mine," aren't we being presumptious? How are we to know if the "friend" truly is a friend?

Jesus was a "Friend of whoever accepts His friendship." Was He a Friend to those who did not accept His friendship?

I think He was more of a friend to them. There are times when Im reading the bible that I get the impression that Jesus is frustrated with the dependance of the apostles. Rather like "hey, I'm your friend. I love you. Accept that already. I have other people more in need to see to".

I have to confess I feel a bit "put out" that up until now this entire thread has been about sharing our views on friendship. And the first time someone gets criticized for sharing their feelings who does it end up being? That's right -- ME again. ALWAYS ALWAYS ME. Why do you people always have to try to come after me, attack me, try to "correct" whatever it is I have to say? WHY CAN'T YOU JUST TREAT ME THE WAY YOU TREAT EVERYONE ELSE ON HERE AND LET ME HAVE MY SAY JUST THE SAME??? I wasn't picking at anyone ELSE's statements. I wasn't finding fault with anyone ELSE's view of what friendship is. I'm sorry if I sound like I'm throwing some kind of pity party here -- that isn't my intention -- I'm just really angry right now that this has happened YET AGAIN. YET AGAIN I get singled out and made to feel like I don't belong, like I don't have the same freedom everyone else has here to just participate, have my say on the subject, and be heard like everyone else. No, someone has to pick it with me. WHY??? WHY???????????????????????????????????????? mad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gif

LHC,

Did you mean that you would be able to accept people (i.e., your friends) to be silent when someone else mistreats or disrespects you?

I am really unclear as to what you meant when you said you'd accept it up to a point on a purely human level.

Well, that sucks! I didn't want to be absolved. I wanted to make a difference.

In the future, I want everyone here to use this template when you accuse Nico of [some stupid, insipid, fallacious, misjudgment]:

enter ME: You are wrong, she never [whatever lie was told]. You don't know her (though you think you may) and you are reading far too much into what she said than she intended.

Nico has a good heart. When you think she doesn't just look down in the sand. I bet you'll turn your head and walk the other way.

She overpersonalizes things because, HEY! SHE'S A PERSON JUST LIKE YOU AND ME! If you promise not to overpersonalize her posts, I'll promise not to overpersonalize your's and think poorly of you!

[Whoever you are, insert your name here], get real! You are not praiseworthy, admirable nor perfect!

Go home and rethink your life. Don't come back until your hypersensitivity to this post has cooled.

exit YOU (quietly)
