‘For the glory of God': Entire staff in Tenn. county clerk’s office resigns over same-sex marriage

The entire staff at a Tennessee county clerk’s office submitted their resignations this week rather than issue same-sex marriage licenses, reports WBIR.

Decatur County Clerk Gwen Pope — along with employees Sharon Bell and Mickey Butler — said their last day on the job will be on July 14, and that they are leaving because the Supreme Court’s decision to allow same-sex marriages clashes with their religious beliefs.

 

 

Speaking for the three employees whose resignations take effect July 14, Pope said they were doing it for “for the glory of God,” and not for the publicity.

“It’s kind of sort of like you don’t want to draw attention to yourself for any reason,” Pope explained. “That’s not why we’re doing this. Not doing it in any way to draw attention to us. It’s for the glory of God. He’s going to get all the glory.”

Pope said that none of the employees have new jobs lined up,  but that “I honestly believe God will take care of us.”

According to Drew Baker of the Tennessee Equality Project, Decatur County is the only county in the state that has said it won’t issue same-sex licenses and,  so far, has not had any requests.

Decatur County Commissioner David Boroughs said he supports the soon-to-be-unemployed staffers for sticking to their beliefs.

“That’s a personal individual decision, but I strongly support them if their faith is that strong,” Boroughs said. “I’m proud of them that their faith is so strong and well-rounded that they feel they can do that.”

The County Commission is scheduled to meet on  July 13 to appoint a new county clerk, however there was no indication whether the new clerk will follow the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Wonder if any of these employees have now given up retirement benefits as a result. And if so, will their church friends help them if they are in dire straits?

I would guess they thought so. Are there jobs christians should not perform? I think so. They seem prepared to put their money where their beliefs are,whether others agree that it is a matter of conscience or not.No one has a right to dictate where someone else's conscience leads him

In my opinion, it is not against my belief to issue a marriage license to the gay couple, as much as I do not refuse dental treatment to those who are gay. Homosexuality is an abomination to God. I do not think it is my business to tell others how to behave, what it matters is my personal relationship with God. If I am required to work on Sabbath, certainly I have to protest as  my religious freedom is violated.  It is sin and against God to commit adultery. If someone who committed adultery and applies for a marriage license to marry some one else would the county clerk refuse to issue one because he committed adultery?  I am not gay. In fact, I detest homosexuality and whenever I know someone is gay it gives shivers over my spine and feel sorry for him/her.  When a beautiful girl is lesbian, I feel bad about her and tell myself "what a waste of her beauty"!

First a few things.I see you are new here and I am still Kinda new. And welcome!

I think I started on the wrong foot with you. I am very expressive and it can look overwrought.

I am such a slow bad typer who flunked my only native language in school.

I think I over compensate thru the magic of  expressive posting of fonts and colours and whatnot.

I understand my way of typing is not everyone's cup of vegie tea.

I know this.

I am pretty  sure, as of now, this gay marriage is not the Persecution.

Though forcing anyone to go against their conscience (on Both sides of Issue) is persecution .

So It can lead that way yes definitely .

However I see God's burning the Dross off will reveal a humble  servant not an offended victim.

I make some misunderstood posts as well sometimes. So I understand. Its hard to get people to read things in the exact way you typed it. Especially on a hot button issue like this one. But while I think your reply to me was a nice one and I'm happy that you can see my concern in that post even if it was a bit animated, I still must say that I just don't see things eye to eye with you on this issue.

I certainly do think that gay marriage is a part of the persecution. Its both functioning as a means to silence bible believing Christians as well as fan the angry flames of the papal powers that will soon play a roll in the near future.

You might not believe me when I say this, but I also wish some people would change the way that they view homosexuals so that more homosexuals can come to Christ without having rattled emotions and a distorted idea of their sins and who God is. But I do not think they should be shielded from the truth simply because it could potentially be a hard truth to handle for some people.

Biblical permission is given for divorce. Without a doubt many that end up in divorce is not for biblical reasons and many marriages could be saved if biblical principals were followed,.

Court clerks would not have anyway of knowing which was a divorce for adultery,physical abuse etc..Couples that divorce are not bent on destroying the business of others because others do not want to participate in their behavior

Court clerks know what a marriage license to two men means. Never from Gen-Rev do you find marriage that refers to any combination except one man,one woman.

Interesting meme, but untrue. Divorce used to be illegal in many countries. You may not remember when it was an arduous task in this country to get a divorce and many  people found temporary residency in Nevada or went to Mexico for their divorces.

So, if you don't remember, either you aren't old enough, your mind is failing you, or you just weren't paying attention!

She was even sent to jail this past Thursday by a federal judge for refusing to compromise her beliefs.
          
If Davis had lived in North Carolina or Utah, where officials have passed laws to protect the religious conscience rights of county clerks, she might not be facing possible contempt-of-court penalties, including fines and even jail time.

In the simplest terms possible can someone please show me where the hate comes from.  Keep it simple so there is no room to misunderstand please.

Why is it considered hate for those that believe gay marriage is wrong and it violates their religious beliefs to participate?

There are christians that believe the bible says very clearly this is wrong. They do not believe biblical scholars will come along and find it only a cultural issue. They don't believe the story of the woman caught in adultery prohibits them or proves they are like the pharisees to simply say this is wrong and I want no part of it.

Where is the hate in "I believe this to be wrong and as a bible believing christian I do not want any part of it

Should the gay community and it's supporters be able to decide what participation means to individual christians by calling them names and accusing them of hate and taking them to court? I am not referring to the legal aspect of this as to her job. Personal behavior,on whose side is the hate

Is there hate in deliberately destroying businesses?

Is there hate when those that refuse are routinely hammered with past sins?

Do past sins prohibit any right to further conviction and acting on it? Is this hate of those the gay community cannot bend to their will?

Again,I believe this woman is wrong in how she handled this.But did exhibit the hatred leveled at her.

She did not condemn anyone. She didn't call anyone names.She didn't call for their deaths or to be stoned in the town square.

I tend to think it is really all a semantical war of words. If the government would just abandon the word marriage and bureaus that formerly gave out marriage licenses would start giving out civil union licenses with all the civil rights, it could all be over. Give the word marriage to the religious world or whatever world you feel you need the blessing of. Then, for a "clergy person" to conduct a "marriage", the couple would need to present a certificate of civil union and then receive the religious blessing. Or just get the blessing for those willing and skip the license. Getting to be a real buffet of options.

But I guess it is just more fun to fight about it. Some complicated problems are really not.

Religious liberty: The Kentucky county clerk and the Muslim flight attendant

Two current cases may help clarify the issue of the degree to which religious conviction exempts a person from performing job duties.  The New York Times and the rest of the national media are giving front page treatment to Kim Davis, the Rowan County, Kentucky county clerk who refuses to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples on religious grounds. For them, the story is one of religious bias from the hateful right standing in the way of human happiness.

The other story is receiving less national attention. Melissa Nann Burke of the Detroit News reports:

A Muslim-American group plans Tuesday to file a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against ExpressJet Airlines for allegedly failing to accommodate a Metro Detroit-area Muslim flight attendant who objects to serving alcohol based on her religious beliefs.

The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said the airline had directed employee Charee Stanley , to work out arrangements with the other flight attendant on duty to accommodate passengers’ requests for alcohol. The setup, it said, had worked without incident until Aug. 25, when ExpressJet placed Stanley on administrative leave for 12 months, after which her position may be terminated, according to CAIR.

“We have informed ExpressJet of its obligation under the law to reasonably accommodate Ms. Stanley’s religious accommodation request regarding service of alcohol,” Lena Masri, staff attorney for CAIR-Michigan said in a statement.

It should be noted that Express Jet operates feeder flights, smaller aircraft carrying the banners of American Eagle, United Express and Delta Connection, feeding into hubs. Some of the airplanes Express Jet flies have only one or two flight attendants. It should also be noted that alcohol sales are a major source of profitable revenue for a carrier that lacks much market clout, operating as it does as a contractor for major airlines.  Accommodating Ms. Stanley could very readily cut into the alcohol sales and ultimately the viability of the company.

I think that in both cases, the job duties come first. Religious convictions should not be used to change the nature of the job that the incumbent, after all, sought. We have the liberty to worship as we wish, as we have the liberty to seek employment consistent with our religion. I do not think we have the liberty to impose our religionon others, including our employers.

I am as appalled as anyone at the sloppy reasoning used by a Supreme Court majority to impose same sex marriage on the country. But the way our system is structured, the duties of a county clerk now include issuing marriage licenses. So, too, the duties a flight attendant include serving alcoholic drinks.

If we establish as a general principle that people can redefine their jobs depending on religious conviction, then we invite chaos. Carly Fiorina, who has run a global technology company employing all sorts of people, handled this question very well, I think:
