Aubrey:   From the CDC:

Severe symptoms in a few people.

Less than 1% of people who are infected will develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningitis (inflammation of the brain or surrounding tissues).

  • The symptoms of neurologic illness can include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, tremors, seizures, or paralysis.
  • Serious illness can occur in people of any age. However, people over 60 years of age are at the greatest risk for severe disease. People with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and people who have received organ transplants, are also at greater risk for serious illness.
  • Recovery from severe disease may take several weeks or months. Some of the neurologic effects may be permanent.
  • About 10 percent of people who develop neurologic infection due to West Nile virus will die.

Treatment

  • No vaccine or specific antiviral treatments for West Nile virus infection are available.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to reduce fever and relieve some symptoms
  • In severe cases, patients often need to be hospitalized to receive supportive treatment, such as intravenous fluids, pain medication, and nursing care.

More detailed information can be found on our page for health care providers(http://www.cdc.gov/westnile/healthcareproviders/index.html).

That's awesome! I nearly purchased this for my husband in March for his birthday. I was afraid it wouldn't fit him though. Is it comfortable to wear?

I never even notice it, and I wear it all the time.. :)

What a gorgeous, rare bird!   On very, very rare occasions, I will see a Piliated Woodpecker.  They are the common woodpecker's Goliath.

I have a bird feeder that I always keep with bird seed in it. I swear they cost more to keep in feed than a dog! My yellow Cardinal has been there once, so I have seen him twice. I learned about pileated woodpeckers back in the 5th grade. Never saw one until last year. Incredible birds.

Several years ago, I was in the Dominican Republic. I could not figure out why Dominican men seldom wear shorts as it is so hot and humid. By the end of my time there I, unfortunately, knew why. Mosquitos! Months after my return, I still had the healing spots from my mosquito bites. The mosquitos there are very small and they are in/out before you even know they were there, unlike the Tiger mosquito I see in the eastern US.

Mosquitos there carry dengue fever (bone break fever), chickungunya, and other illnesses along with West Nile Virus. My most recent trip there was as the chickungunya fever was raging. Fortunately, I had learned not to wear shorts! Lots of repellent. It was amazing, but you could not find Tylenol anywhere, so many people were sick with the illness. So if headed to the Carribean, remember regular long pants and other clothes that cover you well. So far, I have not picked up anything more than a common cold.

I wonder if Noah let mosquitoes on the ark purposefully or if they are an invention of the devil?   Maybe mini little demons....  ?  GAH Right now, I am fighting ants in my garden.   I go out there covered as much as possible in the heat and still have scars from where they have chewed me up.  I have coated my garden with diatomaceous earth, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper.   All it does is slow them down for a few days and they are back to feasting on me like I'm a candied apple or something.   Does anyone have any wisdom about how to slow them down even more?

I know boric acid works very well indoors; I don't know about outdoors.  For example, see http://www.hytechsales.com/boricdirections.html

I've had malaria, and often enough, I can't tell you what day of the week it is. I have to look at my watch. I thought WNV was similar to malaria. Malaria kicked my butt, though, when I was in Guatemala. I was down for three days. The tetracycline seemed to help. After donating for a number of years, the blood centers no longer want my blood because of my history of having malaria.

Here in N. CA. we have ticks, poison oak, forest fires, and mild earthquakes. It's a toss up between that and chiggers, leeches, hail and tornadoes in the Midwest. Not interested at all in alligator or shark country. We've had bears break in and out of our house, but we surprised one once and it was very happy to get away from our dog.

The air has changed in our area; it has that clean, crisp smell of fall.  That is a good thing, but the shorter hours of sunlight is not a good thing.

Thanks for the boric acid idea.   I looked into it further and you can use a very, very tiny amount in the garden before it will kill the plants, however, you can mix a larger amount with sugar and put it into containers with holes poked into the lids.   The ants can get in, but the wildlife or pets won't be able to get at it because it is toxic to them.   It takes a while, but the ants will carry it back and share the boric acid with the ant hill.    I spilled some honey today so it is honey and boric acid.    Thanks for the tip.   :D

We have Horned lizards, which are a protected species in Texas. They need harvester ants in their diet daily, so I keep two ant beds alive for them. One in the front yard and one in back. The result is we have tons of lizards, not just Horned lizards either. :)

Last night my husband and I stayed up a little late to see the Perseid meteor shower. I found an astronomy viewing site we'd never even knew existed. It was wonderful! There were two telescopes set up so we could see Saturn. It looked like a little like the CBS "eye" logo. Lots of families came out with their lawn chairs, blankets, flashlights and glow sticks. We only stayed until 11 p.m., but we got to see at least a dozen or so meteors. The audience was so excited with each one. The meteors left a trail of "oooooohs" and "aaaaaaahs".

Though tonight's light show may be less impressive than last night's, I encourage anyone who's never seen a meteor shower to get outside and look to the northeast skies. (I don't know how to see it if you're not in North America.)

Just want to say, this is such a cool song:

I was Born Under a Wanderin' Star (Lee Marvin)

I remember the movie that this is from, watched it with my dad. Also loved the song, "They Call The Wind Moriah". Thanks for the trip down memory lane. :)

I went down to the valley to run errands and to get a badly needed haircut.

My regular barber lady was not there and her co worker went at it.

I think there was communication problem. I told her the usual and she must have thought I said I wanted to look like one of the Three Stooges!

I'm wearing a hat now!

Oh No!! Once my son asked for a military style cut and his usual stylist was off that day, the "new" girl gave him a bald spot. When he got home, I took him back and got our money back, but he has never returned to that salon again. I hope your hair grows fast. ((hugs))

I have a bird feeder that I always keep with bird seed in it. My yellow Cardinal has been there once, so I have seen him twice.

I have had a Cardinal (red) couple at my feeder much of the summer. I am now entertaining and feeding a whole family of "teenage" Cardinals! I say teenage because they are big enough to fly, which I equated to kids and their driving licenses! Got at least 2 boys and 2 girls as well as the parents. What a trip. Been watching the boys develop their red color. I have noticed Cardinals will be the first ones out of there when I show up in a doorway about 15ft from the feeder. The young ones are letting me stand there and watch them.

Many years ago, Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood, and Jean Seberg made a movie filmed in Eastern Oregon up in the Wallowa Mtns called "Paint Your Wagon". I was one of the extras in that movie. If memory serves me well, Clint Eastwood did the Moriah song.

Unhappily for my mom and her more conservative SDA beliefs than mine, I was always into the whole film industry and film making. Even had more distant family members in the industry - one was a director, among his several roles, for Alfred Hitchcock. A stepfather was a personal assistant to Louie B Mayer of MGM. And Carole Lombard was a cousin by marriage to my Grandmother. My great-grandmother was a Lombard, her maiden name was Coleman.

Herbert Coleman's book is somewhere in my long list of books to read!
