CARSON: ‘I DON’T BELIEVE IN THE PROGRESSIVE MODEL OF YOU POOR, POOR LITTLE THING’

GOP presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson stated “I don’t believe in the progressive model of you poor, poor little thing, you’re the victim and I’m going to take care of you” on Wednesday’s “Fox & Friends” on the Fox News Channel.

Carson said, “I have a very deep concern for the downtrodden in our society. If you go back and you look at my history, you will see that is consistently the pattern, putting in reading rooms, particularly in Title I schools around the country, going around and speaking at schools. I had a program at the hospital where we had hundreds of kids come in, and I would talk to them, and show them slides, and try to get them encouraged. It’s just that I don’t believe in the progressive model of you poor, poor little thing, you’re the victim and I’m going to take care of you, because that’s not getting us anywhere, and I’m trying to wake people up.”

He added, “it’s a false narrative that I want to get rid of all of welfare and all the programs. That’s just something that the left-wing puts out to try to make me seem like a bad guy. That’s absolutely a lie. But what I do want to do is get business, industry, academia, Wall Street, churches, community groups involved and investing in people around them. Because that’s the only thing that brings people out.” And “since the 60s, we’ve spent over 19 trillion dollars on the war on poverty. What do we have? 10 times more people on food stamps, more welfare, more incarceration and crime, broken families, out of wedlock birth. Everything was supposed to be better, it’s not only worse, it’s much worse.”

Carson commented on Hillary Clinton’s server being turned over to the Justice Department, stating, “I’ve been saying for weeks, whether she’s in legal trouble or not, if people are paying attention, they recognize that someone in her position, who doesn’t realize that they are putting the nation’s security at risk by doing what they’re doing. How in the world are you going to turn the keys over to them? Are you kidding me?”

I took that passage to mean that we should help people in need, but also find ways to have those people that are capable help themselves.   In this way they are not dependent on the government any longer due to wide ranging opportunities to rise up out of poverty.      Kind of like not giving a person one fish for one day, but teaching that person to fish for themselves with long-lasting improvements.

Instead of welfare to generations of freeloaders, train them to start their own businesses in order to provide for themselves. Welfare dependency destroys initiative and responsibility and creates generations of moochers living on the backs of people who actually have to work to put food on the table, gas in the car, and heat in the furnace.

It always sounds so righteous to claim anyone touching the Holy Grail of welfare wants people to starve. Poverty is not a new incurable disease that has reached crisis proportions suddenly.A few common sense requirements would go a long way

Support to become self-sufficient I can totally get behind. But it has to be genuinely supportive, not punitive. Shaming and punishing the poor for their poverty is not a solution.

The flip side of the claim that 'anyone touching the Holy Grail of welfare wants people to starve' is the claim that anyone who wants to give the poor a hand up just wants to keep paying them cash and not help them develop skills. That's not accurate.

Truth is important

 

Who has suggested shaming or punishing?  Translation: man who grew up only eating because of food stamps no longer believes in food stamps. 

The underlined is a total fabrication of what Dr Carson said.

Who has said anything against a hand up? It is the continued handouts to a large segment of society that can do something to help themselves.

When I am at the food shelf and see young people with all the latest expensive electronic toys,showing off the latest tattoo,or discussing their plans for a concert they are dying to go to,and watch those who volunteer,the young people should be so ashamed of themselves they hide their face. A volunteer,so bent over her head is not far from being level with her waist handing free food to perfectly healthy young people that have money for non essential items but somehow can't feed their families.The neighbor that lost his job and couldn't be bothered with finding another,laying in his lawn chair with beer and cigarrettes and full welfare benefits  until his wife had enough.Told him to hit the road or support his family. Surprising how fast he found something.

Another neighbor,two children out of wedlock,living with another man,neither will work,full benefits,but they have a snowmobile,boat,motor and other toys.

For five years I worked with young single mothers that worked the barest minimum they could get buy with. Funny how they to could pay for tattoos and concerts and other silliness while drawing benefits and WIC because they were "poor single mothers and couldn't feed their babies.

Whether they can find work that pays enough to support a family is beside the point. I don't care if they work at MacDonalds and the state makes up the difference.No one that is physically and mentally capable should be laying in a lawn chair with a can of beer while the rest of the neighbors work two jobs so he can do that
