Since it is estimated that only half of all Seventh-day Adventists are vegetarians, those who do still eat meat should consider the desirability of avoiding red meat. Recent research has identified the reason why red meat is less desirable than other meats.

Note: Goat cheese is much higher in Neu5Gc than cheese made from cow's milk. Salmon has some Neu5Gc, which is more than most other fish, but still much less than red meat. Link: http://eatingoffthefoodgrid.blogspot.com/…/neu5gc-live-fast…

Scientists crack why red meat is linked with cancer - and SUGAR may be to blame

Red meat is linked to cancer because of a sugar molecule called Neu5Gc
Neu5Gc is not found in humans and so our immune system attacks it
This leads to inflammation which over time promotes tumours forming
Chicken and fish (which are not linked with cancer) don't contain Neu5Gc

Red meat may be linked with cancer because it contains a chemical that is unnatural to the human body, scientists say.

Previous studies have linked red-meat consumption to a number of cancers, especially colorectal, breast, prostate, ovarian and lung cancers.

Now, U.S. researchers believe the culprit is a sugar molecule called Neu5Gc, found in beef, pork and lamb. When eaten, the body sees it as a foreign substance - and the immune system attacks it. This leads to inflammation in the body, which over time is known to promote the formation of tumours.

The same process could happen when people drink whole milk, certain cheeses and fish eggs, which all contain Neu5Gc, the researchers warned. As Neu5Gc naturally occurs in most mammals but not humans, this also explains why humans are more at risk cancer while other carnivores are not. The research is significant as it diverges from the previously held theory about red meat and cancer.

Previously it was believed there was an association between red meat and cancer because of the carcinogenic chemicals linked to grilling. But grilling fish and chicken generates the same carcinogenic molecules as grilling red meat and yet they are not associated with a risk of cancer. Scientists said the fact that they have very little or no Neu5Gc could now explain why.

Dr Ajit Varki, from the University of California San Diego, who led the study, said the Neu5Gc phenomenon is unprecedented.

Very intresting. I've been considering giving up meat. I really don't eat red meat all that much, maybe out at a restaurant or felt like cooking it. Taste sooo good tho. .. poor cows. Hey, have you heard this theroy that cow methane contributes more to "global warming" than emission do? Cars, busses, etc..are nearly nothing apparently compared to cow gas. So, they said if we quit animal agriculture we wouldn't have an issue anymore....idk the validity but none the less interesting. Thanks for posting this, more inspiration to quit flesh eating. My brothers a vegetarian, says he doesn't wanna make his body a tomb lol :)

If humans don't have Neu5gc, carnivores should consider human flesh since it might be safer!

I saw that ,Ron; and added it to my save list for health topics. I just love it when the media gives 'proof' to the wisdom of a healthy flesh-free diet. teehee

We're eating too much meat

The typical American diet contains more meat — especially red meat and processed meat — than is healthy for us.

  • Why it matters: Meat comes with plenty of health perks and key nutrients like iron and vitamin B12, but too much of it can drive up risk of heart disease, stroke and different types of cancer.

Between the lines: The problem is largely limited to half the population.

  • As The Wall Street Journal's Andrea Petersen bluntly puts it: "American men have a meat problem."

? By the numbers: U.S. men who are 20 or older eat roughly 40 ounces of meat, poultry and eggs each week.

  • That's a good deal higher than the 28 to 33 ounces recommended by federal guidelines.

The difference between men and women is stark when zooming in on red and processed meats, like burgers, steaks, sausages and cold cuts.

  • Men eat 23 ounces of these per week, while women eat 13.4 ounces, The Journal notes, citing federal data.

? Zoom in: Several high-protein diets, like the carnivore diet or keto, are marketed to men as effective ways to build muscle.

  • Plus studies show that many men link meat-eating to masculinity

The stakes: Processed meats contain preservatives and high levels of sodium, which can increase risks of different diseases. And steaks and hamburgers bring saturated fat and cholesterol.

  • On top of that, there's a steep environmental toll of consuming red meat: A diet that includes beef has 10 times the climate impact of a plant-based diet, while a diet that includes chicken has just three times the impact.

The bottom line: There's room to enjoy everything in moderation, but it’s worth keeping an eye on how many of our meals include red or processed meat.

New fight over red meat

Fresh recommendations from the government's scientific advisory committee are adding heat to the debate over red meat.

  • The draft dietary guidelines would tell Americans to limit how much red meat they eat, The Wall Street Journal's Andrea Petersen reports.

? Why it matters: The government doesn't always follow scientists' recommendations. But if the limits on red meat consumption make it into the finalized U.S. dietary guidelines, they will have wide implications — from changing up school lunches to influencing what food companies produce.

  • So far, federal guidelines warn against consuming too much saturated fat, which comes from steaks, hamburgers and processed meats like ham and sausage. But they haven't waded into the red meat debate.

Zoom out: Red meat contains key nutrients like iron and vitamin B12, but some studies have demonstrated that too much of it can increase the risk of heart disease. Other studies haven't found a clear link, Petersen notes.

  • Eating less red meat is also one way for individuals to reduce their carbon footprints, the Scientific American reports.

? But "we have very strong preferences for red meat that are tied up in all sorts of social and cultural factors," Lindsey Smith Taillie, a UNC professor of nutrition, told The Journal.

Zoom in: The scientists recommend new federal guidelines that emphasize plant sources of protein, like beans, peas and lentils.

  • Meat, poultry and eggs, which are currently the first line item in the protein-foods category, would be moved down — below seafood, nuts and seeds.

? What to watch: The meat industry is pushing back on the recommendations.

  • In 2020, the scientific advisory committee suggested big cuts to the consumption guidelines for added sugar and alcohol, which the government rejected.
  • These recommendations might also be scrapped.

Too many wild deer are roaming England’s forests. Can promoting venison to consumers help?

WINCHESTER, England (AP) — In the half-light of dusk, Martin Edwards surveys the shadows of the ancient woodland from a high seat and waits. He sits still, watching with his thermal camera.

ps:So is venison red meat? If not is it OK to eat?? I don't mean that's unclean, because it's not.

? Eat less meat, experts say

Americans should strive to eat less meat and saturated fats, while upping their intake of fiber-rich legumes, fruits and vegetables, a panel of nutrition experts said in new recommendations today.

? Why it matters: The fresh recommendations build on existing evidence that too much red meat, salt and sugar can be linked to health risks, Axios' Ivana Saric writes.

  • More than half of American adults struggle with chronic health conditions — like type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease — for which unhealthy diets are a risk factor, the new recommendations say.

? The intrigue: Some experts were upset that the report didn't take a stance on ultraprocessed foods.

🍔 1 food thing: Burger wars go big

Fast food giants are escalating the beef — rolling out bigger burgers and upgraded classics as they fight to revive traffic in a price-weary fast-food market, Axios' Kelly Tyko reports.

  • McDonald's is launching the Big Arch Burger nationwide for a limited time starting March 3. The burger features two quarter-pound patties, three slices of white cheddar, crispy and slivered onions, lettuce, pickles and a new Big Arch Sauce.
  • Burger King said yesterday it has refreshed the Whopper for the first time in nearly a decade, upgrading the bun and moving to sturdier packaging. The chain also brought back its Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper this week.
  • Wendy's recently rolled out a limited-time Cheesy Bacon Cheeseburger, stacking cheese and bacon as signals of indulgence and brawn.

🥩 Across the industry, protein has become shorthand for value and satisfaction at a time when customers are scrutinizing every dollar.

I don't know where that estimate came from. Perhaps half of American Adventists are vegitarian.

Worldwide I would guess it is less than 10%.

Look, if you want to believe meat is dangerous, go ahead.

But the population of American Seventh-day Adventists is anything but healthy.  Science in the last 20 years has shown that people need much more protein and fewer carbs.

There are many reports of people going carnivore and losing weight.
