Neil D Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 SAN DIEGO - Border Patrol agents discovered a 35-foot-long tunnel beneath the U.S.-Mexico border after it caved in and the asphalt roadway above it collapsed, officials said. The tunnel ended in a patch of vacant land near the San Ysidro port of entry, said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It was reinforced and was about 3 feet by 3 feet, and it appeared to have been used recently, she said. It wasn't immediately clear when the tunnel was built or whether it might have been used for smuggling drugs or people. Authorities sealed off the U.S. side with sandbags and metal after discovering it on Monday, Mack said. [:"red"] The tunnel is across the border from an area that is either owned or leased by Mexican Customs.[/] [:"blue"] This is disturbing to me- neil [/] More than a dozen tunnels have been found along the southwestern border in recent years. In 2003, Border Patrol agents found a tunnel that originated in a private house in Mexico and ended in a parking lot on the U.S. side. A year later, U.S. authorities found evidence that someone was trying to rebuild the passageway. "We do believe it's a trend where smugglers are attempting to go underground after 9/11 as a result of the heightened security," Mack said. Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted January 11, 2006 Moderators Posted January 11, 2006 Disturbing? I'd agree. The illegal Mexican immigration is a truly huge problem, at least for California. I don't think our U.S. president has a clue as to its seriousness or how to control it. The poor Mexicans are risking their very lives daily just to be able to earn some money. The Mexican economy is so poor they don't have a chance down there. But why can't we establish some really easier LEGAL immigration quotas?? Beats me. Dr. Shane Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 President Bush understands the problem and he knows what to do. He just won't do it. He was governor of Texas. Mexicans can make a living in Mexico. It is not some kind of hell. Most Mexican are very proad of their country and do not wish to come to America. The illegals that come here are peasants, looking to make some extra cash. Many of them come and go. Some stay here. I favor a wall built along the border in combination with a guest worker program. BTW: I doubt that is the only tunnel. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Neil D Posted January 12, 2006 Author Posted January 12, 2006 Quote: BTW: I doubt that is the only tunnel. No doubt...In the past 5 years, there have been several tunnels written in the news media. And up to now, have been used to smuggle drugs and people int the US. The problem that I see is in this sentence- The tunnel is across the border from an area that is [:"red"] either owned or leased by Mexican Customs. [/] Why is Mexican Customs involved in making tunnels to the US? Is it because they are currupt and smuggling people and drugs thru the tunnels? If this was known to the Goverment of Mexico, and they did nothing about it, isn't that a kind of provokation that can bring about a war? Quote: I favor a wall built along the border in combination with a guest worker program. I wonder who we are walling out, ....or is it walling in....? What about Mexican Army generals that are paid off by the Mexican maphia and send Mexican Army troops over the border to shoot at our Border Patrol? Would that be grounds for a war? It happens. But Mexico is our biggest trading partner and one of our largest sources of OIL. Don't look for the US to retaliate. But a wall would be a good idea. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor...
