Amelia Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Eruption rocks Alaska's Mount Augustine volcano Wednesday, January 11, 2006 Associated Press []http://www.avo.alaska.edu/webcam/augtst.jpg[/] ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The Alaska Volcano Observatory said Mount Augustine Volcano erupted Wednesday. Geologist Jennifer Adleman said the blast sent an ash cloud about 30,000 feet into the sky. Residents of Clam Gulch on the Kenai Peninsula told the observatory they had spotted ash in their community, but Adleman said she was not sure if ash was spotted in the air or on the ground. A pair of explosions shortly before 5 a.m. marked the onset of the eruption. The explosions were preceded by increased earthquake activity Tuesday night, which prompted the observatory to upgrade the level of concern code from yellow to orange. With the explosions, the code is now red. Meantime, the observatory said it plans flights to gain more information on the kinds of gasses that the mountain expelled.
