The Bush administration is seeking to appoint a lawyer with little immigration or customs experience to head the troubled law enforcement agency that handles those issues, prompting sharp criticism from some employee groups, immigration advocates and homeland security experts

Sen. George V. Voinovich [:"red"](R-Ohio)[/] went so far as to tell Myers that her résumé indicates she is not qualified for the job.

Myers held a variety of jobs over the past four years at the White House and at the departments of Commerce, Justice and Treasury, though none involved managing a large bureaucracy.

Presidents, governors, mayors and other politicians have always promoted cronies. If we don't like it, we can push our legislators to ban it. However it is an incentive for party loyalty in both political parties. It is part of how party politics works.

I am not aware that President Bush ever promised to reform the cronism system. What Bush is guilty of is not being a reformer. He is doing what all other presidents before him have done - recess appointments included.

Those appointed during a Senate recess still need Senate approval. It just comes a few months down the road which normally means it the media won't pick it up. These are made not to avoid Senate approval, but to prevent the opposition party from using the media to battle against a nominee. Every President has used them that I am aware of.

What this is is SPIN. If anti-Bush forces could spy on him in the restroom they would complain about how many sheets of toilet paper he uses to wipe himself.

The Post excels; grouser extraordinaire.

Seems tah me that Immigration and Customs has always had, what is it? in-house or otherwise qualified promotions and/or appointments… and, look at the gawdawful mess we have (where our borders and other points of entry have been turned into points of access for the ‘truly unwanted’[:"red"]*[/]; which, in turn, those same ‘truly unwanted’[:"red"]*[/] illegals are given twofers as perks – a license to vote in tandem with application for one to drive [California had 300,000 ‘non-citizens’ {wink, wink} registered to vote in time for the November elections of ‘04] ). Do we have a system or systems in need of overhaul? Yousa betchums! Who gives a flung bling-bling who does it? JUST DO IT! charges of cronyism be dinked.

[:"red"]*[/]…distinction is inherent.

So, hoorah! if a broompusher, a potato-peeler, USCongressperson, USSenator (errr, per congressperson and/or senator - on second thought...) – or, better yet, a trusted ‘crony’ is sent to Immigration and Customs with a convoy of 18-wheelers and cargo of pink slips and W2 forms... let it happen. Hopefully,

the program would not run afoul of the ACLU, Dems, Unions, or other such; and, ah so, begin planting size 13 footprints in fundaments, oops, pardon… high heel spikes in fundaments, like... sayonara, like... yesterday, already.

This obviously non-performing Bureaucratic Inc. cannot better exemplify the despicable malaise otherwise known as borders security.

It is only important that there is change; it can hardly be worse than it is now – even were I to head up that mess.

So, hoorah! that there seems now to have been a strategic implementation of tactics; Yo, rip-it, girl!

Shazam. (anythewayz, I’ll take blame for this flagrant display of cronyism, as it was I who incessantly bombarded the White House with ‘suggestions’ to close our borders and to more severely scrutinize all other points of entry -- putting a ‘tracking’ chip in every two-legged critter without feathers in these USofA. Kidding! smile.gif …about the ‘flagrant display’, that is, blush.gif )

But Jim Pasco, executive director of the Fraternal Order of Police, which represents several thousand ICE employees, lauded Myers's government experience.

"That organization . . . is on some days almost dysfunctional," Pasco said. "I think Julie may be just the person to pull people and functions together to get them working right for a change."

But Marcie Ridgway, Voinovich's communications director, said yesterday that the Ohio seator had resolved his concerns by talking privately with both Chertoff and Myers. Ridgway said Voinovich was not available to speak directly about the issue.
