She kept asking for more handouts, and more handouts, and more handouts. She would take LARGE portions of pot-luck food, and put it into Tupper containers to take home "for her kids". Everything was always "for my kids". She was really good at pushing the "guilt buttons". She couldn't get a job, because of her kids. She couldn't help out with church needs, because she was busy with her kids. Of course she had applied for welfare too. Everyone in the church ended up just hoping she would move on.... Pastor Harold was talking about the 2 concepts of the Great Controversy and the Bible: love and fear. They are the two opposites. Either we love as God loves and are willing to forgive and be patient, or we will fear for our personal health and safety. We must remember that we are followers of Jesus and servants of God. All through history God's people have been persecuted. God's innocent have been slain. Innocent unbelievers have been killed. There have always been terrorists. The Bible has recorded plenty of those stories... Why are we so quick to desert our Master when the attacks are even on a different continent? Fear will bring out all sorts of sentiments and we are seeing the backlash on the news and on social media. But remember that Jesus submitted to persecution until He lost His life. We as His followers are not called to carry the burden of the world's sins on our shoulders (thank God) but we are commanded to take up our cross and follow Him. Are we so accustomed to our nice little free lives that we are clueless as to what it means to live and die for Him? We are soft and have not been tested yet. Where does hatred and vengeful talk come from, love or fear? Few in North America have an idea of the depth of experience we will need soon. My greatest fear is really that I will not have the depth that will bring me through what is already reality to others in the world. I do not want to abandon my Saviour who loved (and will love) to the end. As I make my way through Old Testament history I am seeing God's love more and more in the midst of violent times. I am getting more of an idea of the wickedness of man of those days- I had barely a clue! And then I come to the last chapters especially of Isaiah and now Habbakuk (I am reading chronologically) and the rays of light are really becoming brighter. God has always had a special place for the oppressed. In His world the winners are not those who are mightiest in battle as it is in our world. Their downtown Dallas church complex is very impressive. Romans 13:4 is the standard proof text cited in support of an aggressive violent militarized foreign policy.
