Shane,

You have on a number of occasions shared your view of Hollywood and its outlook on life. You have decried the constantly immoral and amoral product which is produced.

I basically share your distaste for these offerings and in fact have not watched a movie or secular TV drama for quite a while. This is my own choice and I don't feel that anyone who chooses differently is necessarily doing anything wrong.

Nevertheless, feeling as I do, I refrain from watching things such as the Golden Globes, Academy Awards, Emmys, etc. I don't even take much notice when they are announced in any news bulletin, don't bother reading any news item in a magazine or newspaper.

So

• (1) why do you bother?

  and

  (2) why comment if it just reinforces your surrent beliefs?

I did not watch the Golden Globes, just the news coverage of it is enough to make me sick.

I hear that TiVos and DVRs can record the program in advance so that later you can skip through any unwanted portions.

The only reasons I might watch an awards show are IF the host is one of my favorites, and a movie or television show I like has been nominated.

If I don't care for their choice of show host, I definitely won't watch the program!

What the Gold Globes and Emmies and other such events are is an industry back-slapping event where people in that industry can get together and say "that-a-boy". I get that.

We have simular events in construction. The AGC (Associated General Contractors) has simular anual events where awards are presented to contractors for various accomplishments. Yet these are not televised or reported on the evening news. I understand why this type of event would be exciting for someone in the industry. But why should I care? I am not in the industry. I am just a consumer. I don't expect others to care about the awards handed out in my industry. So why this infatuation with those in the entertainment industry?

If the entertainment industry wants to involve the consumer so much, why not let us choose who get nominated and who wins the awards? With today's technology that would not be hard and may even increase the ratings of such back-slapping events.

Probably because a lot of people watch these actors/entertainers regularly on movies or TV and they feel that they 'know' them. They often vicariously live through these people who often appear larger-than-life.

This same thing does not often apply to constructors (or most other professions, come to that.)

We do. Every time we turn on the television, or the radio, or spend money at the movies. We vote with our money.

The industry caters to that for which the people are willing to pay.

We do have a vote in what kind of movies and programs are made. That is true. However the movie "Passion of the Christ" was much more successful that "Brokeback Mountain." Yet "Brokeback Mountain" won picture of the year and "The Passion of the Christ" did not. So much for the voting power of the dollar when it comes to the Golden Globes.

"Transamerica", another gay movie, was out done by both "March of the Penguins" and "Narnia" which both lost at the Golden Globes. Not even King Kong was able to win.

The story of Johnny Cash's life "Walk The Line" won three awards. However the movie failed to cover the religious aspects of his life and had it done that it may not have gotten any awards. Hollywood would rather see a gay Johnny Cash than a praying Johnny Cash.

We should all go out and see "End Of The Spear" this weekend so Hollywood knows there is a demand for such movies. But I wouldn't look for it to recieve a Golden Globe next year.

And yet, people continue to go to the movies. They continue to watch the Golden Globes. They continue to buy magazines with their favorite stars on the cover. They talk about it over the water cooler and on the Internet.

As long as people keep buying and aren't complaining, then, with the peoples' dollar, the people are voting that this [current situation] is what they want.
