it appears that he was a new convert from Islam (which is predominant in Kazakhstan)... I have a hunch that, as a new believer, he may have been too zealous in his outreach efforts to others..

Was wondering what “inciting religious hatred” really meant! The article at the opening post really didn't say much, but your article, Pam, at least gives a little more info, like "religious discord" which made a little more sense.

I do not know the details of this specific issue and therefore I cannot comment on it.  However, I can make a more generalized statement.

Some people think that the heart of the SDA message is to attack the beliefs that others sincerely hold and/or their denominations.  That is false.  The heart  of the gospel (and the SDA message) is a positive one and every one of its doctrinal statements can be proclaimed in a positive manner that does not attack.
