Stan Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 GLOBAL WARMING QUESTION: From what is being said, we broke a record for global warming in 2015. Something like 140 years old record. My question is this, what made it get that hot 140 years ago? Yhey had no smog etc etc, or if they did, I suspect nothing like today. Thoughts? Please NO science bashing or religion bashing... phkrause 1 Quote If you receive benefit to being here please help out with expenses. https://www.paypal.me/clubadventist Administrator of a few websites like https://adventistdating.com
Moderators Bravus Posted January 23, 2016 Moderators Posted January 23, 2016 Nope: it wasn't a 140 year old record, it was the hottest year in the 140 years for which records exist. The second hottest year was 2014 (not 1875), and 15 of the 16 hottest years on record have occurred in the past 15 years. It simply is far, far hotter globally than it has been in human history, and getting hotter at a rapid rate. phkrause, Unchained, AliAgins and 1 other 4 Quote Truth is important
AliAgins Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 I read this article in LATIMES today. And David Geelan is correct. It has to do with record keeping. The article indicated that they thought it was the hottest year ever. Period. Stan and Naomi 2 Quote

Unchained Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Every winter I can see with my own eyes that something has changed radically. When I grew up, we had tons of snow during the winter. We went sledding, skiing, we built snow caves and on Christmas Eve the fields were never green and bare. Usually the snow came in October/November, and stayed until spring. However, the past 10 years or so we've had very little snow during the winters. The fields are frequently bare at the time that used to be the coldest months in the year. I do live in a geographical location that supposedly is more sensitive towards global warming than other places, but I think the rest of the world eventually will experience changes too. Quote
Administrators Naomi Posted January 25, 2016 Administrators Posted January 25, 2016 Looking out on what remains of almost 30" of snow it is difficult just now to wrap my mind around global warming. Last year close to two weeks when the temperature did rise above zero also made one wonder about the weather. Please don't misunderstand, I am not discounting global warming, just commenting on what I/we live with JoeMo 1 Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God
JoeMo Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I understandthat the term "Global Warming" is no longer policically correct; we should ose the term "Climate Change". That accounts for things being hotter in some places, things being colder in other places, andweather simply being more volatile everywhere. For example, with the exception of only a few days, Denver has averaged about 10 degrees cooler this year than last year. I'm also sceptical of how "the warmest year ever" is determined. NOAA and NASA have both been suspected of "adjusting" temperatures from certain reporting staions (like weather buoys) to account for changes in their locations. Is this valid? There are other sources that claim that the planet's temperature has been stable (some even say declining) for the past 12 years. Quote
Moderators Bravus Posted January 25, 2016 Moderators Posted January 25, 2016 Those sources are simply lying, because they have been well paid to lie. The truth matters, and when it comes to measuring and averaging temperatures, the truth is objective. Quote Truth is important
bonnie Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 What explains the open winters in previous years. Or the exact opposite the next year with snow so high that people had to climb out second story windows. I have copies of old letters from my mother's family that homesteaded in MT discussing the weather with those writing the letters wondering if this was the biblical diverse weather. They range from worrying about the open winters and what it would mean for spring moisture and grazing land to trying to get out of their homes ,blocked by snow. My grandmother died from the influenza and my grandfather could not get out of the house, much less to the road to go for the DR. What caused the terrible Veterans Day blizzard that caused so many deaths in the 40's that came out of no where in MN. Our halloween blizzard that came out of nowhere was blamed on climate change. Later followed by open winters.Or is that all a lie or someone's imagination and the climate changes are all a new thing Stan 1 Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Moderators Bravus Posted January 26, 2016 Moderators Posted January 26, 2016 Weather has always varied and will always vary. Climate has always changed, too. The difference this time is the very rapid rate of change, and the large human population that will not have a lot of time to adapt to that change. Neither of those things - the rate or the population - has a precedent on earth. It is clear that human activities are making a large contribution to the rapid rate of change. It makes sense to try to do less of that, because the effects and consequences will be huge for many people if we don't. phkrause 1 Quote Truth is important
bonnie Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Man will not destroy this old world. Not by the car he drives or the manner he chooses to heat his home. I know it is an antiquated belief but I believe there is Someone far more intelligent than the most educated among us that has given us more than a few clues. We can and do certainly pollute unnecessarily ,of course the more human beings the more pollution there will be.Some can't be avoided,a lot of it can be. Do you believe that humanity has the strength of will to turn it around? If global warming is indeed due to human activity, do you think we can get every 1st, second, and third-world country (including China, India, Russia, and SE Asia) to quit burning carbon-rich fuel? The US could take its carbon footprint to zero, and the rapid growth on industrialization and all its trappings in the balance of the world will generate more CO2 than what the US saves. If what you say is true, the only way to deal with it is to adapt. We can not stop it at this point (if your opinion turns out to be true). I don't know if rapid heating of the earth has a precedent, but rapid cooling sure does. Moderators Bravus Posted January 26, 2016 Moderators Posted January 26, 2016 If the question is the pragmatic one of whether we *can* change, then why keep on arguing about the empirical one of whether climate itself is changing? If, in the end, you don't *care* whether climate is changing, why keep listening to the well-paid liars rather than the scientists who actually know? So, let's take it as read, because it's what the evidence actually says: the world is warming, and human activities are contributing. Then look at the consequences: more extreme floods and droughts, island nations being covered by rising seas. Impacts on the lives of millions of the most vulnerable on earth. If you are unable or unwilling to change, you are saying you don't care about those lives. Will you argue and work to save them? I doubt it: there's a strong correlation between those views and the 'stop foreign aid' views. As it happens, there are two issues on the political question of whether action can happen: 1. Australia, the USA and Canada use the most energy per capita of countries on earth. While together we form only about 5% of global population, we produce about 40% of global emissions. If we change, emissions change. 2. There is action happening already. China has signed up: most populous country on earth, something like 13% of global population. China has agreed to grow its economy using more renewable energy and less fossil fuels. Many other countries have also joined. The notion that we can't, or shouldn't, act is contrary to the facts. Moderators Bravus Posted January 26, 2016 Moderators Posted January 26, 2016 As to leaving it in the hands of God: what is His miraculous plan for the people of Kiribati when their nation is entirely submerged? Is he going to take them all to heaven? Or miraculously move them to another country? If he miraculously made them appear in your country, would you take them in, or would the INS round them up and incarcerate them. Would they be welcome? And, if God chooses not to miraculously teleport them, will you send a boat? For whatever inscrutable divine reasons of his own, God has a long record of *not* saving us from the consequences of our own actions. He does hold us accountable, however, for the ways our own actions impact others. CoAspen, phkrause and LifeHiscost 3 Quote Truth is important
CoAspen Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 I'm not saying that anyone was suggesting...just saying... SDAism has often had a fatalistic approach to world happenings by saying, 'well, Christ is coming soon', sort of like 'washing of hands'. If people really believe this world was given to mankind to manage, then would that not be like spitting in the face of God to not do our best towards changing and preserving it? bonnie Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 That isn't quite what was said. Some of us have a antiquated belief in what the bible has to tell us. Man will not destroy this earth. Man cannot control the weather. That is not spitting in the face of God,but thinking that we are going to have control might be considered by some to spitting in the face of God. We can certainly pollute and in many area's have done a fine job of that.Sometimes in ignorance and sometimes in greed. Because Christ is coming soon should we continue to pollute unnecessarily? Don't think that was ever said. Man was given dominion, nowhere does that indicate we can control the weather. Many SDA's really disregard the times we are living in and casually say "Oh,not yet,you are paranoid. Some SDA's see every headline as a sign. For me,how anyone can look around at world conditions, human behavior and say,Oh you are paranoid,it has always been like this, As we get closer to the end I don't understand the sometimes flippant sounding response. As we get closer and closer to the end those that think puny man can thwart what God has said will happen is to me spitting in the face of God. You think by reducing fossil fuel consumption that the famines and pestilence and diverse weather conditions God warned us about can be avoided? Don't think so. None of us know when or how soon, but soon to God and soon to fallible human beings are not the same. No matter how many cars you take off the road,we will have diverse weather conditions. Man will not destroy himself,God will take care of destroying and saving Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Ask Adam and Eve. man no longer holds the "keys" to this Kingdom - satan does. Since when has man done his "best" to preserve the planet? We've been destroying the environment since Adam and Eve were kicked out of the garden. Call me a pessimist; but it's likely that anything we do now is doing too little too late (assuming global man-made global warming is actually happening). I believe the Bible backs me up when I say that the only thing that can save humanity (and the planet) from self destruction is Jesus. Even now - how many people are doing their "best" towards changing it? My guess is a small minority. For example, some say "quit using gasoline in cars" by going electric. That won't help! The majority of electricity used to charge those cars is generated from coal, which is about 10 times as polluting as gasoline. Quote

We don't need the media, Democrats, republicans, etc. to feel that the earth has been warming. I can remember when I was growing up in NYC, we used to actually have all the 4 seasons. But as time went by, summer got longer, autumn shorter. We moved up to Massachusetts in March of '73. When we first moved there, the first few years as soon as September came around, we went directly from pretty warm days to cold days. Not freezing, but at least a 20-30 degrees deference. I can always remember saying to my wife, how short the summers were and how long the winters were. But as the years have gone by, its actually gone the other way. There's actually been barely any spring or fall! Its been pretty much summer and than winter. The biggest thing I've noticed is, the summer's have gotten much warmer and the winters, much colder. Look at this year, down here in Florida, where usually by middle of November it starts to cool down, but not this year. It was warm right into January. And than its only been a few weeks, and now its warming up. Sure we still get some cold days, but by the afternoon its pretty warm. I also remember when we first moved here back in '11 summer was a little shorter than now. As far as I'm concerned I don't need any political party to tell me its getting warmer each year CoAspen 1 Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.
