[John 15:3] "For scarcely for a just man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die." [Rom 5:7] The greatest love a human can produce is for a friend. Even then it is "scarce". God's agape love: "God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us...When we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son." [Rom 5:8,10] Opposite our human love, which can only love those who are lovable (see Luke 6:32), is God's agape love. God's love is not biased and therefore self-seeking. He loves all equally. The cross of Christ proves that agape can die for much more than one's friends, but also one's enemies. Christ, as the Son of Man, was willing to say goodbye to life forever so that His enemies might take His place in heaven. Conclusion: If one is to be like Jesus then one must love like Him too. Human love is polluted with selfishness, but God's love has no "self" in it. Therefore to love as God is to be empty of all self-seeking in one's life. This is what it means to "love your neighbor as you love yourself". Quote
