As a neuroscientist I can tell you unequivocally that it is impossible to overload the human brain with information.  If you learn one new fact every second, which is virtually  impossible,  It will take you approximately three million years to approach brain overload.  The human brain has billions of neurons and hundreds of billions of interconnections.  It can process more than two million bits of information per second and can remember everything you have ever seen or herd.

All of this information is retained indefinitely.  I could take an eighty-five year-old man and place depth electrodes into a certain part of his brain followed by appropriate electrical stimulation and he would e ale to recite back verbatim a book he had read sixty years ago

I don't buy that.

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

I'm over 80 and I can vouch for Dr. Carson's statement.

so you guys think that if a certain part of your brain was stimulated, you would remember what you had to eat on the 2nd Tuesday of October of your 4th year of life?  And you'd remember word-for-word your grocery list from 30 years ago?

Maybe Dr. Carson should demonstrate his theory on an Alzheimer's patient. Biological memory isn't as simple as digital memory as far as we know and can be affected by chemicals, electrons, or both.

Although we don't currently have the technology to read minds as Christ did, he did demonstrate that it is possible. When our life records are reviewed at the end of time, there must be a way to identify our choices and actions and discard all of the unimportant stuff like shopping lists and so on.

The LORD doesn't need tiny probes to tease out the memories of our lives, but instead makes real-time recordings, via Spirit, then downloads them into the "books" containing our life records that will be accessed on Judgment Day. It's too easy to forget that everything we have said or done has been or will be entered into our life record to determine our fitness for the Kingdom, according to Christ. It's Spirit, then, that accesses our minds, enabling the LORD to know what we need even before we ask. We may think that we have secrets, but there are no secrets that the LORD doesn't already know.

I suspect that Dr. Carson was talking about a normal, healthy, individual and not about a person with a disease of the brain.

So, I guess, one implication of this would be 'be careful what you put in, because it stays there'. ;)

My wife says that all the time, and I definitely agree with that!!

As someone who has lost 2 grandparents and one parent to Alzheimer's (and as someone who likely has the inherited genes associated with early-onset Alzheimer's), I can attest that much of what they will say or do MAY or MAY NOT be related at all to the things they have done/said in the past. It is impossible to say what words, feelings and behaviors will result from losing one's cognitive abilities. To assume otherwise is ludicrous.

I have heard a Neurologist say something very similar.

Perhaps all that will come unpackaged and we will have full access in the future...  am good with that.

Dr. Carson spoke of energizing the brain via electrical stimulation.  The older one gets, the less energy one has.  If you unplug a computer, you won't get any data out of it either--but that doesn't mean it doesn't have any.  In the case of the human brain, part of the de-energization that may occur is related to a form of "diabetes of the brain" in which the brain can no longer be powered via the usual chemical pathways.  When blood glucose no longer is accepted, a secondary power source can be found in the form of ketones.  Ketones are found in the blood of fasting individuals as a secondary source for the body, broken down from stored fats.  A natural fat high in ketones is coconut oil.  Give an Alzheimer's patient a couple tablespoons of coconut oil twice a day and their memory and brain function may be somewhat restored.  Feel free to research this online--it's relatively new, having been discovered in only the past few years.

Blessings,
Green Cochoa.

Hey, maybe that's why mine still works!  I drink a blend of almond/coconut milk.
