A Seventh-day Adventist school in Nicaragua was featured on national television as the first secondary school in the nation to integrate digital technology in the classroom. Students at Colegio Vocacional Adventista de Nicaragua, or Adventist Vocational School in Nicaragua, (COVANIC) began using digital boards, and tablets as the school year began earlier last month. Channel 2 News Media, one of the largest television stations in the country, featured the story in a 5-minute report. Principal of COVANIC Juan A. Guevara, said that the project was implemented to improve the learning level of its fifth year secondary students. “Providing today’s available tools will increase the interaction between teachers and students inside and outside of the classroom,” said Guevera. Thousands of Adventists respond to the Zika virus in Brazil Members of all ages are mobilizing resources to act against a virus that the World Health Organization has declared a "global public health emergency." As global alarm grows about the Zika virus, hundreds of thousands of Seventh-day Adventists in one of the most affected countries, Brazil, decided to respond with their hands and feet. The Adventist Church in Brazil kicked off the Zika Project, a national campaign to raise awareness, prevent new infections, and mobilize people to act against a virus that the World Health Organization has declared a global public health emergency. Zika, which can be transmitted by mosquito or unprotected sex with an infected partner, has no medical treatment, but the brief illness and its occasional symptoms of mild fever and headache usually go unnoticed by those who are infected. Doctors’ major worry is the virus may be linked to thousands of babies born with underdeveloped brains in Brazil. Read more at news.adventist.org. Adventist Risk Management's CEO steps down, leaves a legacy of service to the Adventist Church Robert Kyte will go on to pursue business interests in the U.S. state of Idaho. Robert E. Kyte, president and chief executive officer of Adventist Risk Management, Inc. (ARM), has announced his retirement from service to the Seventh-day Adventist Church and from ARM effective May 31, 2016. Kyte has led ARM since 2009. He will retire to pursue other business interests in Idaho.   “As I look at the current status of ARM, I think ARM is situated for continued excellent service to the Adventist Church and has in place a great leadership team and committed, talented employees to carry forward its mission,” Kyte said in his email to ARM employees. “I feel the time is right to make this change." Read more at news.adventist.org. ADRA Switzerland provides monetary assistance to refugees in Lebanon The nation of Lebanon has the highest concentration of Syrian refugees within its borders. The civil war in Syria has been raging since early 2011. Since then, thousands of residents have fled to Lebanon to seek refuge. Currently, the nation of Lebanon has the highest population density of foreign refugees worldwide. Many refugee families live in Beirut and its surrounding area. This region not only has a high unemployment rate, but also a high cost of living. The longer the crisis continues, the greater people suffer. In 2014, 49 percent of registered Syrians in Lebanon lived under the poverty line. In 2015, it shot up to 70 percent. There is no improvement in sight, on the contrary. The cost of living is constantly rising as is the unemployment rate. The hardships are especially felt during the winter, when the region experiences rain, cold and snow. This is a crucial time when families need additional funds to buy blankets, warm clothes and fuel, but money to purchase these necessities are often unavailable.  Read more at news.adventist.org. Andrews University elects Andrea Luxton to serve as its sixth president Luxton comes to the position with extensive education and leadership experience. The executive session of the Andrews University Board of Trustees elected Andrea Luxton on March 1 to serve as the sixth president of Andrews University (and 24th president overall since Andrews University first began as Battle Creek College). Luxton replaces Niels-Erik Andreasen who is retiring this spring following 22 years of service as president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s flagship university. Prior to becoming president-elect, Luxton has served as provost of Andrews University since 2010. Before coming to Andrews University, Luxton served as president and vice president for academic administration at Canadian University College (now Burman University), as an associate director of education at the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, and as principal/president of Newbold College in England. She holds a PhD in English from Catholic University of America and a postgraduate diploma in Institutional Management and Change in Higher Education from University of Twente, Netherlands.
