The role of the Holy Spirit in Bible study

I think we all believe that the Holy Spirit has taught us and teaches us as we learn what the treasures the Bible holds.

If that is the case, why the varying opinions?

I think it's because each person has varying backgrounds and needs.

1.  Just because a person believes the Holy Spirit led them doesn't mean it did.  Examples:, Saul, king of Israel, the Pharisees and Sadducees, and Judas Iscariot.  The Bible has a lot more examples of this. It sometimes condemns the entire kingdom of Israel for rejecting the messages God's prophets gave them while claiming all the time to be God's people.

2.  We have to be willing to be taught and to lay self aside when we study.  Not very many people have that type of humility.

3.  We must believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God to us as individuals.  By that I mean we can't just pick and choose what we like and disregard the rest the same way we do with uninspired authors.  If we don't believe the Bible is inspired, and remember that Jesus said that we will be blessed according to our faith, we will be rewarded according to our faith in the God's word.  IOWs, I don't believe God can bless our study we we are so lacking in faith, and so full of self.

In other words, not much use to study....unless we be perfect.

The words of Jesus have the greatest affect on me as I think He is the only reason our Father left that evidence here.

39"You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; 40and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.… John 5

This was, in context, spoken directly to the religious leaders of Jesus' day. The Holy Spirit is useful to those who set aside their own wants and desires so the Holy Spirit can lead.
