CoAspen Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 What many people forget, or may not even know, is that the revolutionary had some of the same rhetoric as we have today. You had whigs, torries or often called patriots and loyalist, who did not always agree. Loyalist were harassed, jailed and ridiculed quite often. Some lost their property and had to leave the colonies. The freedoms fought for, were for the ruling white class, those with lands and monies. The British did incite slaves to leave their owners and fight with them. Although this did happen it was not a very successful campaign by the British. There were even those who were neutral to war in the beginning but by the end felt compelled to join the patriots along with some loyalists. Families were divided, along with neighbor against neighbor. It is all very easy to look up and read about. Books have been written one the subject as well. I do agree that many of the reasons for that war are still valid today and should be remembered. This country does its best when focused on the positives and has a can do attitude rather than the popular, with some, of 'Oh no, its going down the tubes, rally the wagons and fight off the (what ever is the popular whipping horse of the moment)!
