Live Without Cell Phones & WiFi

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live without cell phones, WiFi, Bluetooth, microwave ovens and more?  Well you can live is such an area.

In 1958 the Federal Government established a 13,000 square mile National Radio Quiet Zone that includes Green Bank, West Virginia, population 143.

The reason for this is the Robert C. Byrd radio telescope, owned by the National Radio astronomy Observatory and eight (8) other such telescopes located in this area.

They need total radio silence in order to operate.

Interesting!  I wonder if there's some reason they can't use fiberoptics for their internet.  (the residents state they only can use a "wired" connection that is really slow..)

In Colorado I had a wired Internet connection that was actually fiberoptic.

They should probably send a radio telescope into deep space in order to minimize interference from terrestrial sources.

If the USA's power grid is ever shut down, there would likely be little radio communication except from units powered by generators or by solar-charged or generator-charged batteries.
