10 REASONS JESUS WOULD NEVER WIN THE U.S. CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE VOTE!

Followers of God struggle with politics. While we are encouraged to be good citizens, respect and pray for those in positions of authority, we must make sure we don't become "activists" for issues and behaviors that are contrary to the Kingdom of God. Some things are clear, others are not. We must exercise judgment and wisdom in what we say, and the way we vote.

Romans 13: 1-7 (The Message)

"Be a good citizen. All governments are under God. Insofar as there is peace and order, it’s God’s order. So live responsibly as a citizen. If you’re irresponsible to the state, then you’re irresponsible with God, and God will hold you responsible. Duly constituted authorities are only a threat if you’re trying to get by with something. Decent citizens should have nothing to fear."

"Do you want to be on good terms with the government? Be a responsible citizen and you’ll get on just fine, the government working to your advantage. But if you’re breaking the rules right and left, watch out. The police aren’t there just to be admired in their uniforms. God also has an interest in keeping order, and he uses them to do it. That’s why you must live responsibly—not just to avoid punishment but also because it’s the right way to live."

"That’s also why you pay taxes—so that an orderly way of life can be maintained. Fulfill your obligations as a citizen. Pay your taxes, pay your bills, respect your leaders."

The following blog was not written by me, yet I found it very helpful in helping us to think through the political implications of what it means to be a follower of God in contemporary culture here in the USA.

10 Reasons Jesus Would Never Win The American Evangelical Vote

By Benjamin L. Corey *See bio below

It’s political season, have you noticed? (Seriously, kill me now.)

As part of that political season, pundits like to crack numbers, explore potential paths to victory, and discuss voter blocks. One of those voter blocks is yuge– in fact, it’s hard to win the presidency without it: The Evangelical vote.

I know this block well– I grew up in it. I was one of them. I still hold many of the same theological values they hold, and if it were not for the fact the term has become a political term instead of a theological distinction, I might even still consider myself one.

But if Jesus ran for president? Well, I can nearly assure you: He’d never win the Evangelical vote. Here’s 10 reasons why:

10) Jesus was famous for giving away free healthcare.

One of the core aspects of Jesus’s earthly ministry was healing the sick– it’s actually how he became so popular (Mark 1:45). It is undeniable that healing the sick was high on Jesus’s radar, but sadly, I don’t see that priority shared within the political label of “Evangelical.” This election season, the candidates most popular with Evangelicals are actually running on the promise that they will take healthcare away from people.
You won’t find two more opposing messages than that.

9) Rich Evangelicals would see him as a divisive candidate who waged class warfare.

Let me assure you: Rich people wouldn’t be a fan of Jesus, because when he talked about rich people it wasn’t on positive terms. Instead, Jesus said things like “Woe to you who are rich!” (Luke 6:24) and even used hyperbole to argue that being wealthy makes it basically impossible to enter God’s Kingdom (Matthew 19:24). Contrast this with all Jesus’s talk on how blessed the poor will be in his Kingdom, and I can promise: He’d be accused of being anti-rich and promoting class warfare.

8) He threatened those who exclude immigrants and do not help the poor.

The political term “Evangelical” is not known for including immigrants and being focused on helping the poor– and those are the people Jesus threatened with eternal damnation in Matthew 25. This would be a political death-blow (it actually was), as the rich and powerful would be infuriated with the idea that building walls to shut out immigrants, and failing to be generous to poor people, results in an eternal punishment and exclusion from God’s Kingdom.

7) He told people to pay their taxes.

Jesus ministered in an area that was grossly over-taxed, and people were miserable for it. Yet when he was asked about this, instead of calling taxation “theft” and rebuking the government, he simply looked at the coin and said, “If the money has the president’s face on it, and the president asks for it, give back to him whatever he asks for.” (Matthew 22:21)
This clear disinterest in fighting issues of government taxation would not go over well with American Evangelicals.

6) Jesus was known for staging public protests at church.

Instead of political appearances at churches to try to win their political support, Jesus is the guy who confronted church leaders and said, “Hey you guys! Did you see that the the most notorious sinners have entered the Kingdom ahead of you?” (Matthew 21:31). He is also the guy who went into the only mega-church of his day and completely ransacked the place because they were oppressing the poor and excluding people the church thought were “out.”
That kind of activity not only fails to win votes, it actually gets you killed.

5) He often resorted to name calling when confronting the popular religious leaders of his day.

While I think many American Evangelicals would appreciate the fact that Jesus got verbally punchy at times, I don’t think they’d appreciate the people who were his target.

When facing off with the Franklin Grahams and Jerry Falwells of his time, Jesus called them names like: hypocrites, fools, white-washed graves, blind leaders, and children of hell (see Matthew 23).

Thus, Jesus could never win the American Evangelical vote, because too many powerful Evangelical leaders would hate the names Jesus called them during his sermons.

4) Jesus would be viewed as anti-death penalty and soft on crime.

Jesus had his chance to prove that he was tough on crime, and he failed miserably. When faced with the public execution of a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery– where there was little doubt of guilt– Jesus stepped in and halted the execution. To make matters worse, he actually turned the tables on her would-be executioners and claimed they were no more righteous than the one who stood condemned.
The fact that Jesus would be advocating mercy for prisoners, while spending so much of his time rebuking the governors of America’s Bible Belt, would make winning an election impossible.

3) Jesus’s absurd teaching on enemy love would be seen as a threat to national defense.

If I’ve learned anything this election season, it’s this: The candidates who most claim terms like Evangelical or Christian also happen to be the candidates who most talk about slaughtering our enemies. But Jesus? Jesus taught the opposite– consistently teaching that we must love and serve our enemies, instead of killing them. In fact, the word Jesus used for “enemy” included both personal and national enemies, meaning his platform would be a threat to national defense.
Thus, in an election cycle where a bigger military is an Evangelical priority, a candidate like Jesus would never stand a chance.

2) Jesus rebuked those who were into concealed carry.

One could never win the Evangelical vote without being in extreme favor of unrestricted gun rights. But Jesus? Well, Jesus claimed that in order to become a child of God, one had to embrace a life of nonviolent enemy love (Matthew 5:44-45). In fact, he even publicly rebuked his best friend for pulling out a weapon with the intent to use it in self defense.

To all those looking for a leader to protect their gun rights, Jesus would be seen as a weak hippy instead of the Warrior Messiah they’re longing to follow. He wouldn’t be a candidate who gave speeches at the NRA, but he’d certainly be the guy who showed up to kick over their tables.

1) Instead of “American Exceptionalism” Jesus would spend his campaign talking about a place that is WAY better than America.

Expressions of American Exceptionalism are absolutely essential to winning the Evangelical block– in fact, when leaders offer a self-critique on our own culture they’re often labeled as being part of the “hate America crowd.” Jesus, however, would spend his campaign the same way he spent his ministry: Talking about a culture that is far better than the one we find ourselves in.

The central teaching of Jesus’s ministry is the Kingdom of God. You can’t flip more than a few pages in the Gospels without seeing Jesus talk about it. When you see this, what you’re seeing is a candidate who is claiming there is something better that what you see around you– a Kingdom that is unlike anything in this world. His Kingdom is not an abstract Kingdom that exists only in the future, but an alternate culture one can live and experience right now— one that is WAY better than American culture.

But to preach there’s something better than America, and that we should change to become more like it? That would be political heresy.

<><><>

Honestly, I miss the days when being Evangelical meant you were a bearer of “good news.” I miss the days when this term meant you believed in the inspiration of Scripture, and that you believed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ– because in this way, I’ve always been Evangelical.

But these days? These days “Evangelical” is a political term where not even Jesus Christ himself could win their vote.

LET GOD LOVE YOU FIRST, then LEAD LIFE from within!

just as a point of fact, there are TONS of rich liberals, rich atheists, rich Democrats, rich Republicans — wealth isn't something limited to "evangelicals"

Yes- Jesus didn't say that wealthy people wouldn't be in heaven, just that it would be hard for them to get there.

this article reveals exactly the opposite of what it claims. Amazing, that a leftist comes to the conclusion that Jesus exactly echoes his own thoughts. Far from being "different from the world," the Jesus pictured matches almost exactly leftist ideology.

Beyond that, there's the utter thoughtlessness of the whole thing. Healing people=free health care. When someone can start healing people, that might make a tiny bit of sense. But that's not what's being proposed. What's being proposed is that the state will take money from some people to provide medical--not health--care to others. Producing health care or anything else for 'free' would indeed be a miracle.

Virtually every point he makes is similarly witless. But that's because he's not actually thinking; he's just twisting and molding "Jesus" to fit his worldview.

What is really lacking in this article is the condemnation of God towards those who lie and misrepresent. It is not only witless but an outright lie

 10) Jesus was famous for giving away free healthcare.

You won’t find two more opposing messages than that.

Could someone please offer proof of Evangelicals actually running on the promise that they will take healthcare away from people. Denying those unable to help themselves medical care?

. Being against Obamacare is not being against what Jesus taught.  Jesus did not provide healthcare by pointing to those around him and demand payment before He healed them. Nor did He demand others pay for the healthcare of those that refused to work. Nor did He demand that senior citizens subsidize healthcare/birthcontrol/abortions on demand for others. For us personally it means at 71 I will continue working to pay for our escalating medical and insurance costs, directly attributed to Obama's fuzzy idea of cheaper medical care.

A little closer check might show who actually wages class warefare.Ever tale notice of the extremely wealthy liberals that demand others give their wealth away and refuse to pay their taxes. Buffet and Sharpton comes to mind

Another absolute lie.Not even a misrepresentation.  This less than honest author of this tripe forgot a very important word, Illegal Immigration and a flood of refugees that cannot be adequetly vetted for the safety of citizens of the US.

Biblical immigration and the command to welcome the stranger meant that those entering would follow the rules of the country they chose to enter and to assimilate. The same rules, opportunities and punishment that held true for the citizens of the country.

They were definitely not to rape, demand special considerations, and sue  the culture they looked to for safety for every imagined slight. The public eating establishments were not made to alter what they offered because of the religious beliefs of the immigrants.

Question: "What does the Bible say about self-defense?"

He wouldn’t be a candidate who gave speeches at the NRA, but he’d certainly be the guy who showed up to kick over their tables.

The Bible does not address conceal and carry for self defense or protecting one's home and family."Exodus 22 does show quite a bit about God’s attitude towards self-defense. "If a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed; but if it happens after sunrise, he is guilty of bloodshed. A thief must certainly make restitution, but if he has nothing, he must be sold to pay for his theft”"

All that support the popular liberal tell me honestly that you would stand there and let them harm, rape or kill your family and that is what God demands. Would it matter if in defense of your family the guilty was killed without the aid of a gun?

Luke 22:36 has Jesus saying that whoever doesn't have a sword to go buy one. I don't think it was meant as a decoration

Later telling Peter to put up his sword was for a much different reason.Peter was trying to stop something that could not be stopped

It says a lot that so many liberals that are against conceal and carry, themselves have just that or armed body guards. If you protect yourself or hire it done the "guilt" is equal if someone dies.

Jesus had brown skin too! Conservatives might think he's a Muslim.

Christian conservative evangelicals have abandoned much of what can be considered Biblical values. As Adventist's we are well aware the have some challenges with embracing Biblical truth. Their embrace of Trump is evidence that their conservatism is cultural rather than Biblical.

Most conservatives that have a biblical background have always known Jesus was not white. It really is a no-brainer knowing the region he was born in. Maybe a detailed description of Jesus was never given  because it is unimportant to most unless someone wants to make a racial issue out of Jesus. I have never known any conservative to make issue of this, only liberals. Must be very important. Wonder how many of minority race would vote for Jesus if it were known He was white

I went to a small church school for eight years, conservative and we knew what you seem to think is a new revelation or at least one that conservatives are unaware of.  Obviously having this important information would have meant they could not then or now serve Christ.

As Adventist's we are well aware the have some challenges with embracing Biblical truth.

As  Adventist we are well aware that Catholics,Mormons,Islam Lutherans etc have some challenges embracing Biblical truth.

The difference is that some get really pounded on for stating "other religions" disregard biblical truths. Only christian conservatives are fair game for "christian condemnation."

I see a list of 10 fallacies, not a list of 10 valid reasons.

Take the fallacy about "free" healthcare for instance....  Jesus truly healed people free of charge, but He didn't provide healing to every person on earth.  He wasn't a "come here and I'll give you 'free' healthcare if you vote for me" hypocrite.

Socialistic healthcare is not free.  Someone pays the cost of the treatments....  It comes out of the pockets of taxpayers.

All that article does is show the author's depth of hatred for conservatives for it is made up of a pack of lies.

Nor did He demand others fill the kitty to pay so He could provide a "free service. Funny how liberals scream and holler about mixing religion and government, except when they want to misrepresent it and use it to show how pious they are.

Many hear have stressed this is and was not a christian nation yet demand Christian principals as they see them used for their ideology.

Donald Trump's rise is all the proof people need as to the nature the values of many "Christian" conservatives. Their Christianity is cultural rather than Biblical. Many Conservative Christians are merely defending their cultural dominance rather than the truth of God's word. It's about having their economic and social interests served rather than serving humanity and winning the lost. The central message of Jesus has been abandoned and is even despised.

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.

For a great many it is not embracing Donald Trumps values, whatever they are.It is the least of the evils they see in Hilary Clinton or Bernies Sanders.

I have said since the beginning of this election cycle that it is very likely I will sit this one out.Don't know if I could hold my nose long enough to vote for Trump but if I did it would be because of one issue only.

To even imply that Hillary Clinton, the likely candidate is about serving humanity and winning the lost can't even be called a bad joke.

This statement is even worse....  The central message of Jesus has been abandoned and even despised.

How do they despise the central message of Jesus?  You seem to have first hand knowledge of the values of "many"

Specifically what are their values that you so despise, unless of course you are comparing all conservatives to the Westboro church. As disgusting as the behavior coming from there is concerned that would be the same as comparing all black churches to Jeremiah Wright and his twisted message

Nothing implied about HRC or Sanders. I don't believe HRC is about serving humanity or winning the lost. I have never heard her talk about Christianity faith etc. Maybe she has but I don't see her as a woman of faith. I see her as a secular politician.

How do they despise the central message of Jesus?

I would suggest that this text encompasses  the central message of Jesus:

Is 61:1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is upon me, for the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed.

There is nothing about Conservative Christianity's political priorities that aligns with this.

Much of Jeremiah Wright's preaching lines up with the prophetic messages of the OT and that of Jesus. Ironically he is a modern Jeremiah.

Not voting for Trump pretty much leaves Hillary Clinton to vote for. Possibly Sanders but more than likely it will be Clinton. For those that completely reject her Trump is probably the only choice to vote for if you vote. It doesn't mean that anyone that votes for him embraces all his values. McCain was a terrible choice and many of those that voted for him did so more as against Obama.

What specifically? The evangelical churches around here are extremely active caring for the poor. They have many programs for spiritual and practical day to day issues.

So what specifically?

Building a wall on the border and banning Muslims, is about preserving majority American culture rather than Christian values.

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.

I haven't heard conservatives calling for banning all Muslims. Perhaps there are a few extremists as you find with any group but for the most part it is backing up and having a little better plan on dealing with the enormous numbers that other countries are demanded to care for. Having some idea of who is entering and what their intent is.

Many area's of Arizona are completely unsafe and property values have been destroyed because of illegals easy access. A family member of ours had to relocate his family. Our neighbors property is worthless to her for a winter residence or for resale because of the hundred's of illegals in that area.It isn't orderly immigration that they are attempting to end.

MN is slated to receive a large number of Muslims. We have a problem in MN and the distinction of being the number one recruiting area for terrorists. Many of their mosques are only superficially a house of worship and front for recruiting those that want to kill americans and others.Maybe the muslims in MN should clean their own house

Building a wall on the border is not to stop anyone from legally immigrating to this country,it is to stop illegal immigration. Every country has an absolute right to protect it's borders.

Straining our resources to care for them is a concern to many. We had a very minor situation by comparison  in our small town .

No one is quite sure why but we had a tremendous growth explosion.  Our schools were suffering as well as other resources. The city put a abrupt halt on all building and in cases some rentals until the town could play catch up. There  wasn't enough resources for the school to handle the minority requirements. Many people that had already purchased building lots were pretty upset but they lacked answers to the problem of the sudden growth

We are not talking about evangelical churches, we are talking about conservative Christianity's political priorities.

Pretty tough to separate the two.

Perhaps a little reading of God's instructions to how "aliens" were to be treated and the obligation and requirements for the "aliens" themselves

Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this.

Can empathy lead to sin? Some conservative Christians argue it can

WASHINGTON (AP) — Empathy is usually regarded as a virtue, a key to human decency and kindness. And yet, with increasing momentum, voices on the Christian right are preaching that it has become a vice.
