Administrators Gail Posted May 11, 2016 Administrators Posted May 11, 2016 I can buy that! Probably because I already have, long ago. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Moderators Bravus Posted May 12, 2016 Moderators Posted May 12, 2016 I like the article's focus on taking responsiblity for our own emotional states, and agree with it. The context-setting saying 'people take offense too much', though, bugs me. It's almost a truism, but I don't think it's either true or useful. I think people took offense every bit as much in the past as they do now. And some things are genuinely offensive. Often telling people off for being offended is inherently telling them to shut up and continue enduring injustice. How about we just take the message of taking responsibility for our own emotions: and then calmly, rationally, fight injustice? Tom Wetmore, Naomi, Gail and 1 other 4 Quote Truth is important
Aliensanctuary Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 I know from firsthand experience that some people spend far too much time and delight in attacking others and portraying them as evil. Although they may gain an audience, sooner or later some may begin to understand that the attackers are calling attention to other's "dirty laundry" in order to make themselves look better. It's a poor sport, those who chronically surmise evil and project evil motives into others. Alas, for the evil speakers, their "dirty laundry" will be exposed for all to see on that Great Day of Judgment. I suppose that if we answer a rage-a-holic calmly and respectfully, the tone of the conversation could migrate from heat to logic. If we could shrug off insults like a duck sheds water we would have greater peace. Trying to convey emotionally charged issues without attacking or wounding someone's feelings or self-worth is a learned experience, learned by trial-and-error. Geoarrge Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 Inability to regulate emotional reactions is a symptom of amygdala atrophy, which is a likely contributing factor to the downward turns in a civilization's prosperity cycle. Bravus 1 Quote To be an agent of creation is to serve the Creator.
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted May 17, 2016 Author Administrators Posted May 17, 2016 Quote What Is Emotional Intelligence? Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. It is generally said to include 3 skills: 1. Emotional awareness, including the ability to identify your own emotions and those of others; 2. The ability to harness emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problems solving; 3. The ability to manage emotions, including the ability to regulate your own emotions, and the ability to cheer up or calm down another person. https://www.psychologytoday.com/basics/emotional-intelligence or this from Wikipedia: Quote Emotional intelligence (EI) or emotional quotient (EQ) is the capacity of individuals to recognize their own, and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different feelings and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_intelligence The whole wiki article is helpful and informative on the topic.
