Name the language that has 48 characters in its alphabet, 13 vowels, and 35 consonants.

You must be talking about the Unifon alphabet for Saxon-Spanglish? That's the only one, other than the Cyrillic Alphabet that I'm aware of that has so many letters for so many diphthongs.

A heart where He alone has first place.

The Japanese alphabet has a lot of characters. (Actually, it is not an alphabet per se, but a lexicon of stylized pictographs.) They had problems working out a way to design keyboards for typewriters and computers. I think they had to simplify it and leave out a lot. The Chinese had to do something similar, too.

Clue: I am not talking aout Japaneese, Chinese, and Korean.

Korea: While the High-School graduate must know 10,000 characters to graduate, they do have a 24 character alphabet.

Devanagari, but it is a syllabic alphabet.

Clue # 2:

This language is studied today. It's writings have been translated into many languages, as recently as the past 100 years. Yet it is an ancient language that is not spoken today, and new written works are not being produced in this language today.

No, I am not talking about Biblical Hebrew which has fewer characters.

Clue # 3

Today the language is commonly associated with the sacred writings of a world religon.

The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Writing Systems (ed. Florian Coulmas, 1996) says about Devanagari (p. 125) that it has 48 letters, 13 vowels and 35 consonants.

Clio and Cricket, I give you both 100.

Sanskrit is the language. Devanagari is the alphabet.

Congratulations.

Uh, I know this is awfully obvious, but English has 48 letters in its alphabet, if you count both upper and lower cases.

Sorry Ron, it is not obvious. Some would say that it has two forms of each letter, as does Greek, and many other languages.
