Ron Lambert Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 The Japanese alphabet has a lot of characters. (Actually, it is not an alphabet per se, but a lexicon of stylized pictographs.) They had problems working out a way to design keyboards for typewriters and computers. I think they had to simplify it and leave out a lot. The Chinese had to do something similar, too. Quote

It's writings have been translated into many languages, as recently as the past 100 years. Yet it is an ancient language that is not spoken today, and new written works are not being produced in this language today. No, I am not talking about Biblical Hebrew which has fewer characters.
