Ellen White Bibliography Not Including Compilations

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone knows of an Ellen White bibliography which doesn't include compilations. So basically only books that were released as she wrote them e.g. Desire of Ages, Great Controversy etc. There are plenty of bibliographies online but they seem to just include everything released under her name.

Desire of Ages was a compilation. She used it to teach how she wanted her compilations to be made.

It sure doesn't read like one. Whereas there are some books that you can tell they are compilations and they read like that.

Interesting, I didn't know that!

But, as phkrause mentions, I'm thinking more of the titles that read clearly like compilations. One example would be Counsels on Diet and Foods

Yes, compilations are of different strengths, probably the worst was "Messages to young people" and the motives of the compliers are behind the work. (Those who complied MYP apologized for doing it; they said that their motives were bad that they looked for every strong quote to put young people in their place. That they stripped her letters from the warmth that they were written in and where she would give hope and apparently where she even would say something like "it is one thing for a young person to do this but not someone your age.") but others are really good. I like how Kenneth Hart has been working on a compilation on everything Mrs. White said about hell fire. I also really like compilations like "Letters to young lovers" and on using the voice and "Mind Character and Personality" and others. On the other hand There were a number of letters that Mrs. White wrote to another mother on how to deal with her children. Eventually she wrote the mother one that said "Disregard what I said in my other letters, they don't work." But I would not be surprised if some have ended up in compilations.

What we need to do is study to see what she says her visions did and did not do for her. Her comments on things such as the ill fated testimony #11 and the reform dress. We should read letters she wrote to pastors who would make massive quotations from her but who she said are using her words to spread their ideas not hers.  The problem is that we want to read her words from a fundamentalist mentality.  As we read Mrs. White from how she wanted to be read then the compilations don't become a problem.

darkeale, even though Counsels on Diet and Foods is a compilation, I believe, at least for me, its pretty good advice throughout.

sounds like a commentary on Scripture put forth by the RCC'ers and a bunch of Protestant Dr.s of Theology

@phkrause - Sorry, I don't want to give the wrong impression! I agree, there is a lot of great advice there! I'm not trying to avoid the compilations. I'm just looking for a bibliography where things are separated so that it's easy to see what is what. 

@Kevin H - I'd be interested to find out more about the history of the things you've mentioned here, and the history of other Ellen White books. Can you recommend any resources?

Buzzards:  There is some truth in what you say.  Much of what SDAs read of EGW is from people with an agenda.  It is all to often by people who string together a quotation or two and build it into a complete doctrine.  It is often a misuse of her writings and mis-represenets her both as a person and as a writer.

However,  this does not mean that compilations of her writings do not have value.  I happen to think that SELECTED MESSAGES has value.  But, I think that there are others that are of very limited value.

But, it must be remembered that some major compilations were produced during the time that EGW was alive and she was involved in their production.
