Additional Names for Shavuot

Shavuot is also the celebration of the wheat harvest and the ripening of the first fruits, which is the reason for the other two biblical names for this holiday:

1) "Yom Habikurim" or the "Day of the First Fruits."

2) "Chag HaKatzir," the "Harvest Festival."

In the Talmud, Shavuot is also called "Atzeret," which means "The Stoppage," a reference to the prohibition against work on this holiday.

The Role of Children

When the Torah is read in the synagogue on Shavuot, we experience anew the Sinaitic transmission of the Torah by G‑d. Just as the Sinai event was attended by every Jewish man, woman and child, so too, every Jewish person should make every effort to be present in a synagogue on Sunday, June 12, 2016, as the Ten Commandments are read from the Torah.

There is also special significance to bringing children, even the youngest of infants, to hear the Ten Commandments.

Before G‑d gave the Torah to the Jewish people, He demanded guarantors. The Jews made a number of suggestions, all rejected by G‑d, until they declared, “Our children will be our guarantors that we will cherish and observe the Torah.” G‑d immediately accepted them and agreed to give the Torah.

Let us make sure to bring along all our “guarantors” to the synagogue on the first day of Shavuot.

This is from the Messianic Jews:

The Ten Commandments

Shavuot is traditionally regarded as the time God gave the law to Israel.

Wishing you a blessed Shavuot

Also know as Pentecost

Last night, the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot) began here in Israel.

Work ground to a halt as the Jewish People began celebrating God's giving of the Torah to Israel at Mount Sinai, seven weeks after Israel's miraculous Exodus from Egypt.

In addition to being a celebration of the giving of the law, Shavuot is also a spring harvest feast, a time to praise God for the blessing of the abundance of new crops.

"On the day of firstfruits, when you present to the LORD an offering of new grain during the Festival of Weeks [Shavuot], hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work."  (Numbers 28:26)

Most Christians know this holiday as Pentecost, a name that arises from the Bible's command that a 50-day countdown begin on the second day of Passover.

This 50-day countdown to Shavuot is the reason Jews influenced by Greek culture after Alexander the Great's conquest called the holiday Pentecost, from the Greek word pente, meaning fifty.

And on this very day almost 2,000 years ago, as the Jewish People were in Jerusalem celebrating Shavuot, God poured out the promised Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) on the first Believers in Yeshua (Jesus).

"When the day of Pentecost came ... all of them were filled with the Ruach."  (Acts 2:14)

Just as the harvest of firstfruits is a tremendous blessing and gift from God, providing for our physical needs, the Torah and the Ruach are also a blessing and a gift as they enable us to reap a harvest of righteousness.

God wants us to know His Ways and be empowered by His Ruach to live holy lives, bearing much fruit in Him.

"And I will put My Ruach within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes and be careful to obey My rules."  (Ezekiel 36:27)

When the Ruach descended in power, it transformed the Believers in Jerusalem from the inside out, empowering them to reach Israel and the nations with the Gospel of Yeshua.

As Peter preached on Shavuot in Jerusalem, about 3,000 devout Jews came to faith in Yeshua.

"And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, 'Save yourselves from this crooked generation.'  So those who received his word were immersed, and there were added that day about three thousand souls."  (Acts 2:40–41)
