Preperation Day

Just tagging on to the last post.

How one keeps the Sabbath is an individual choice. That is how God has left it. I think that we should be carefull as to how we tell others they should keep the Sabbath.

The Sabbath is to be a deelight, and not a burden. The way we keep the Sabbath in many wayus reflects our personal response to God.

Probably all of us will grow in our Sabbath-keeping experience. But, that is what the Christian life is, a life of growth that is guided by the Holy Spirit.

It would sure be nice if we could all have "preparation day" off from work so that we could actually have time to prepare everything in advance for Sabbath.

Yes, I hav cought myself getting ready on Thursday. I heard a preacher once say that we are to remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy everyday. That is, we don't just worry about keeping the Sabbath holy on Sabbath but we "remember" the Sabbath all week long. That made a lot of sense for me and has helped me prepare better for the Sabbath.

I view the Sabbath as a holiday. After all... holy+day=holiday So preparing for the Sabbath becomes like preparing for a minivacation.

why do we not treat each other as adults?

What is this should and shouldnts we give each other.

its like a mommie saying to their child

"Is that how you clean your room?'

is ridiculouse!

do u know how it sounds?

get a grip!

from where I am standing it looks scolding and spanking for them to do it the way u want.

I dont like what a few do here on the sabbath. big deal! So what.

questioning motives and challenging them on their own adult choices in their life and walk and family.

Twisted!

It smells bad too. and its not biblical.

thinking its a strangers right ,who dont know and love the people they are 'counseling with(or whatever!!!!) with', to tell them how to live their life.

ITs Biblical when you have etablished a connection. A love and individual relationship. Face to face. Knowing and seeing each other. FELLOWSHIP! Real transparent fellowship.

its biblical in the Body of Christ!

not this.

arms length facades!!!!!!!!!

if I should do it perfectly to your specifications will that get me in? Will I pass the inspection so your discernment of all peoples thru this abstract nebulouse technology is gratified????????????????

who are these people?

Can they hear themselves?

Nobody has to defend their sabbathkeeping here!

its ludicris to even entertain that false idea of repoof/rebuke/correcting theology.

its not about others ideas of what I(ME) think the Bible says to your individual grown up walk.

talk about satan blowing out your light... sheesh!

Why do they think they have that right?

And their walk shouldnt be challeged? also?

we discuss and share our opinions and ideas and beleifs.

we share testimonies and experiences.

Whats this questioning hearts ?

Whats this lording over?

whats this patronizing?

all under the guise of christianity? it looks abusive(to the scolders) and enabling(to the ones that dont call them on it).

Its not where JESUS sits. God is not like that. fools

Some people are more spiritually mature than others. I, for one, do not mind if anyone challenges me on my behavior. If they become judgmental of me, that is their problem and I may just start avoiding them. However someone can challenge me on my behavior without judging me and many have done me a favor by so doing.

I try not to challenge others on their behavior unless I know them well and they know me. As a friend, I can bring my concern to them. If I do not have the right spirit about me I say nothing (which is quite common) and just pray for them.

I didn't get the impression that anyone was posting the way that you took it. sorry.gif I am sorry if what I said offended you. Or Cricket. I MEANT it when I said "who am I to judge you if, after study on the subject, by doing_________ you feel you are "keeping" the Sabbath!! I agree with GM that Sabbath keeping is an individual thing led by the Holy Spirit. DOVE.gif

I think that the prohibitions that were listed were our SDA traditional prohibitions on Sabbath keeping. I personally think that the Lord had a much broader sense in mind for keeping the Sabbath holy than perhaps we do. And, I can imagine that there are others who are trying to figure out what that is, like I am.

It is good to be challenged in a positive way at times. It helps us to think and grow. I felt that all the posters on this thread were being "nice" if you will. Again, I have no wish to provoke you as I always enjoy what you have to offer, and it usually makes me THINK. I like that. thumbsup.gif

Halfstep Denise,

I'm sorry my rather frank discussion of some of the things I do on Sabbath shocked you.

It is not my intention to be a stumbling block to others, especially those whom I care about deeply. (That would be you!)

Part of the reason I feel free to make 5-swath prayers to Abba and mow the lawn on Sabbath, stems from several experiences that Abba Himself and Jesus led me through when I first began praying for Mike.

In one of them, Mike insisted that we have a yardsale Thursday - Sunday. I was going to argue him out of it, because I didn't want to "earn money" on the Sabbath. Instead Abba insisted (and by that point I recognized Him when He insisted, but not when He just "spoke") we go ahead and have the yardsale. We did. I sat on the couch outside, manning the sale and reading my Bible. Not a single customer. Yet, technically, any SDA who drove by our ranch that day would have been right to say I was "working".

Mowing the lawn is kinda like that for me. I almost NEVER get to do outside stuff. It's not a chore, it's a delight. And the noise keeps my kids, husband, dog, and various friends from distracting me. Instead I pray. I pray and pray and pray and pray. I worship at His feet, sometimes with tears rolling down my face so intensely I can barely see. During those times, I also ask for protection, cuz mowing and not seeing is NOT a good thing. Mike says those swaths of the lawn are the best I do... but I never see them when I'm making them.

With much love, my dear friend, apology accepted.

A heart where He alone has first place.

and you focused on that?

I hope the rest didnt fly over your head.

There is something evil lurking in that kind of thinking

let me share a experience I know personally .

Richard started going to my little small counntry church. He isnt a SDA but was invited and being a christian and lonely for fellowship we went. He enjoyed the potluck dinners and Sabbath School. He started coming regularly.

A few months later he was animated about a book he just read that lifted his spirirts. It was asked who wrote the book and he said the authors name(Chuck Swindoll,Charles Stanely,Phillip Yancey, James Dobsen,Billy Graham, Bob Foster - u insert whomever you like) and the lady hautingly declared 'That is not a Seventh Day Adventist BOOK!' The other members silently agreed.

Richard was like" huh? " So much for adult christian exchange. He continued going to my little church for awhile but he learned to guard his speech. He wasnt sure what else was forbidden. He told me about it wondering what was wrong with the book he read.

there is something evil lurking not only when waiting to find something wrong. A GOTCHA!!! but with eager anticipation calling attention to it.

So all my posts talking about the evil of delighting in this sinsick behavior you see the word FOOLS!

o my I said FOOLS!

its foolishness to beleive and think and act that its biblical -GODS WAY!

anyhoo I said my piece I cant control how its misinterpreted! O to be a wordsmith!

God bless you

Unfortunately many Adventists are paranoid that members of other denominations are going to pass a Sunday law to kill them and they see everything through that prism.

I have been introduced to church(by my next door minister) at 12 baptized at 13 and went on to be a colepouter later and sabbath school teacher and deacon and head of the Social Committee as well as a Sabbath School Supertendant and so on. I have read Adventist Reveiw and read EGW so much large passages have been fondly memeorized. And I am not even talking about meeting JESUS for the first time.

And I didnt realize that kind of suspicion lurks around the corner. In the church.

How do people think like that. Who would be on the radar?

what do u look for?

What do u do when u see a person u think will betray your cave dwelling?

I dont know where to begin.

Hi Shane,

I sometimes try to prepare for the Sabbath on Sunday and do a little bit each day as I "remember." The most important thing for me is to have my clothes ready. Food is not that important to me. I usually only have one meal on Friday and Sabbath. Sometimes I'll fast all Friday and eat once Sabbath. It's a blessing to have a flat belly and clear mind! laugh.gif

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

I take all that literally, it's much easier for me to follow the words of God than to make up my own standards and rules, whether for or against. I also understand that God has a blessing for me on that day if I devote my mind, body and spirit to Him. I have both honored God of the Sabbath and dishonored (to my shame) Him. Honoring Him is much better. It's a day of celebration that I don't want any servile work to interfere with. It's a day that I have nothing to get in my way of visiting people and having a Bible study or going to visit our older memebers who canno longer get to church or to bring my guitar to a nursing home and sing with our members. There's so much stuff to do through the week that I just want nothing to do with it.

Many times I'll have customers call me on Sabbath and leave a message. I don't answer it no matter how much money I'll loose, I just don't care about it. This is God's time and unless you're with me doing His will or worshipping or wanting to knw about Him I have no time for you

If I had a neighbor who was a SDA and was working on the Sabbath I would tell them to not do that but rather to honor God on this day. If it was the only day that this person had to do this work, I'd offer to help on some other day. We are our brother's keepers. I wouldn't be doing this because I am anything but for that person's eternal welfare. If you let yourself slide into doing what ever you please on Sabbath and don't take care in getting ready for it, then very soon, when the test will come, you will fail and it won't even bother your conscience.

Ask God now to help us all love Him and worship Him more fully on the day He has set aside for us to rest on.

Re: "Would anyone (ANYONE) here dare tell me that I'm wrong to mow my lawn on the Sabbath?"

Probably there are a number of people hwere who would dare to tell you such.

I do not think such an attitude is Biblical.

I will suggest that the Biblical method is to teach basic principles (In this case, what the Sabbath is all about.) and then allow the individual to, under the leading of the Holy Spirit, seek to apply those principles to life.

When one doest that, one typically does not begin from perfection, but, one grows in their Christian experience.

Yes, I'd say it'd be wrong to mow one's lawn on the Sabbath, that is, if the Bible and the writings of Ellen White still have authority among us. I'd refer the reader to pages 2311 to 2323 in volume 3 of the Ellen White Index. Study those pages carefully and read the references and then draw your conclusions. I don't see how anyone can get the impression that it would be OK to do such things on the Sabbath as mow one's lawn or paint a house or put a roof on. There's nothing in either the Bible or Ellen White's writings to indicate that I'm free to do common, ordinary labor as long as I'm thinking about God while I do it. Such an argument, if taken to its final conclusion, would result in the bluring of the distinction between the Sabbath and other days of the week. I'm well aware that I'll almost certainly be called "legalist" by a lot of people for saying this, but I don't mind at all.

At the very least, doing such work could be a stumbling block to our fellow Adventists and even to non-SDAs who know what SDAs teach about the Sabbath. Working on the Sabbath can certainly have the appearance of evil, which the Bible says we're to avoid. (Read, for instance, 1 Corinthians 10:23,24, 31-33; Romans 14:13; 15:1-3.)

I work at a place where there are half a dozen "Sabbath-keepers" who work regularly on the Sabbath. Non-Adventists have expressed some confusion about this to me. They don't understand, and frankly, I don't either. One of the Adventists who works every Friday night and all Sabbath morning until 8:30 AM is an elder in the church. I don't see how he can honestly study with people about the keeping of the Sabbath and the Third Angels' Messages, do you?

Based on what I read in my Bible and in the SOP, it is wrong to work on the Sabbath, and mowing one's lawn is work by any definition of the word.

It's no wonder that God still commands the angels to hold back the winds of Revelation 7, because not only are the people of God not yet settled into the truth so we can't be moved but many are evidently still confused about what the truth is, at least as regards the Sabbath, even after God has revealed it to us over and over again in language that is so plain that even a little child can understand it. Jim

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

I was once cleaning a pile of construction debris in my yard on the Sabbath when my neighbor came out and volunteered to help me. He was a full-time paid missionary that lived on this side of the border but served in Mexico. I was speechless. I told him no. I told him that since I believe Saturday is the Sabbath I really shouldn't be doing that and certainly not taking help from another. I left it as it was and he and I had a little Bible study on a different subject.

JOhn 317:

You missed my point, and it may have been because I did nto communicate clearly enough.

Yes, I would not mow my lawn on Sabbath.

I clearly did not say that anyone should.

If I have communicated clearly, and if you have read previous statements from me, and understood them, you probably know that I have stated that in the issue of Sabbath keeping, I attempt to teach principls, I do not attept to teach applications. In other words, I attempt to bring people to understand the principles and then apply them under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and the Bible.

There are some things that should be left between the individual and God. Further, in the issue of Sabbath keeping, there are aspects that should be left to individual growth.

It is fine for you to share what you do in regard to mowing your lawn on Sabbath. But, be careful as to attempting to judge another, and their committment to the Bible and/or EGW. Your comment on EGW comes across to me as telling me that you have judged me as lacking in relationship to EGW. Perhaps that is not what you meant?

Read the post again where we were told how that person experiences God while mowing thier lawn. That would not be my experience. But, can I dany it as the experience of the person who posted it? I do not think so. I am not going to judge that person. But, I am going to asume that if the time comes when mowing the lawn does not involve an experience with God, that person will make a change. I am going to asume that the peson will follow the leading of the HS at that time.

Greg, I wonder if the reason we have the sex scandal in Pitcairn (you saw it in another thread), was because no one told the islanders that what they were doing was wrong for fear of being called a legalist or guilty of judging? And that it should be left to the individuals for the Holy Spirit to convict them and make them grow?
