High school's viral sign turns away parents

The Catholic High School for Boys posted this sign on their building and on Facebook on Aug. 10.

POSTED:AUG 18 2016 10:50AM EDT

UPDATED:AUG 18 2016 10:50AM EDT

An Arkansas private high school is teaching more than math, science, history, or English; they're also teaching problem solving.

Catholic High School for Boys in Little Rock, Arkansas, posted the above sign in their building and then posted it on Facebook with the caption "Welcome to Catholic High. We teach reading, writing, arithmetic, and problem-solving."

Then comes the sign. It reads:

“If you are dropping off your son’s forgotten lunch, books, homework, equipment, etc., please TURN AROUND and exit the building. Your son will learn to PROBLEM-SOLVE in your absence.”

Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this.

Just have to say, one way of solving of problems is using all the resources you have available to you. If Mom and Dad are a resource and these young men use them as their back-up plan, they are still problem solving by using their resources. An adult who forgets their lunch, or their keys, or their presentation for their 11 o'clock meeting might use any available resource to them as well (maybe call on a spouse, or even their teen aged son (!) to come to their rescue).

I doubt if what the school is trying to convey is that  that as an adult they will never forget anything. More likely it is to try to teach a lesson of personal responsibility

I think it's a good idea.  I can't imagine my parents running to my school with my forgotten homework, lunch, etc.

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

My parents would have told me,"Bet you won't forget tomorrow".

The likelihood of a teenager forgetting his cell phone is slim to none, so why lunch or homework? Most high school students are not so overloaded with responsibility in the morning that they should be forgetting their lunch or homework.

You don't know "most high school students" these days, do you? Mine had quite a full schedule with classes, homework, studying for entrance exams, volunteer work, extra curriculars (like theater, robotics, art club, driver's ed), sports, part-time employment, church, youth group outings, family chores and other family-oriented activities they were expected to do. On top of all that, most schools require their teenagers to get to school 2 to 3 hours before their natural circadian rhythms would like them to be alert.

I gladly helped my children in whatever capacity they needed; I continue to help them in their early-adulthood; and likewise, I help my husband, my mother, my in-laws, and my grandmother. I've even "helped" a few people here on this forum (without going into names or specifics).

People are forgetful, when it's a one-off, who's to judge? And if it's my kids you're judging, walk a mile in my shoes first, then we can talk.

I am not quite sure why you have chosen to make this so personal. As for judging your kids,I don't know anything about your kids. Perhaps it is time you take your own advice. But regardless there is a simple solution to forgotten lunches and homework. For us,lunches and homework were by the door, they couldn't forget.Had they not picked it up they would have stepped on it.

And this was every morning before school?......Mine had quite a full schedule with classes, homework, studying for entrance exams, volunteer work, extra curriculars (like theater, robotics, art club, driver's ed), sports, part-time employment, church, youth group outings, family chores and other family-oriented activities they were expected to do

It might surprise you that out of all the children we raised their schedule was not so different. They did have to get up at 5:30 every morning to do over an hours worth of chores before getting ready for school. Summer time from the age of 12? they still had to gt up at that hour to go to work with their dad. Sometimes six days a week.

A cure for .....On top of all that, most schools require their teenagers to get to school 2 to 3 hours before their natural circadian rhythms would like them to be alert.

they soon learned that 5:30 came every morning at the same time so they learned to regulate their own bedtime regardless of their natural circadian rhythms

We all have different viewpoints on raising our children. It might surprise you that those that don't choose your method also help their children even after they have become adults. Just not in the same way you see as important

I am at a loss as to why this is relevant in discussing high school students........I help my husband, my mother, my in-laws, and my grandmother. I've even "helped" a few people here on this forum (without going into names or specifics).

Many of us can make the same claim. That hardly makes you unique.

It doesn't say but it is entirely possible forgotten homework and lunches etc had become a problem for this school and this was their way of addressing it.

People are forgetful, when it's a one-off, who's to judge? And if it's my kids you're judging, walk a mile in my shoes first, then we can talk.

There is a difference between passing judgement on someone and stating an opinion. Some seem to have difficulty telling the difference.

A lot of people think they have it tougher than others, perhaps for those that do they should take the same walk.

I take it personally, because until very, very recently, I had teen-aged children. I see a lot of posts made here at CA trying desperately to prove how awful kids are these days. I tire of reading about it because I know so many completely awesome teenagers who genuinely take to heart every bad thing ever said about their generation. All the while, statistics prove otherwise that they are generally better behaved and more responsible than previous generations.

"Good for them" is a judgment.

No one is trying desperately to prove how awful kids are today with the policy of this school.  Some are trying desperately to find fault with anyone that does not agree with them. Personally I think it is a positive when any school makes attempts to instill a sense of personal responsibility.  Why would an awesome teenager take this to heart as a bad thing?  Forgetting lunch or homework is a fairly simple issue to address.

Some of the private schools here have very strict enforced rules concerning dress code and especially bullying. It does not say because because they are all guilty,it is for those that are. Where public schools have lost control of these issues the private schools have not. The first incidence of bullying the guilty party is required to call a parent and explain what he did, along with spending the day in the principals office. 2nd offense a parent is required to accompany their child thru classes for the day, monitoring their behavior. 3rd offense they are out permanently. Dress code is the same. It is a reasonable dress code. For those students leaving the house dressed one way and changing away from the parents, they have to call a parent and explain what they have done and why they are spending the day with the principal. 2nd offense a parent is required to escort them from class to class. 3rd they are out. The offenses or need to carry out the penalties are very rare. Rather than students rebelling there is a waiting list for enrollment. Parents are more than willing to pay a hefty tuition . Some I suspect do so for the school to do what they have been unwilling to do and others appreciate the school continuing to enforce the values they have tried to instill in their children.

"Good for them" is a judgment.

That is quite a stretch to call that judging someone.

Nevermind, bonnie. It's not a problem specifically with this one, particular thread. In all honesty, it's just a problem I have specifically with you and the majority of the things you post and the theme that centers around them...

teenagers are rotten, parents are rotten, blacks are rotten, hispanics are rotten, democrats are rotten...

So, yeah, it's just you I have a problem with, well, you and Gregory Matthews too...he's a bit of a know-it-all and can't keep his mouth shut, incessantly telling people everything he knows and why he is right and everyone else is wrong...because he's the most educated and on and on and on...

(Bet this gets me banned. So be it.)

Aubrey, you brought a smile to my face.    Why would I want someone banned who did that?  I would not.

Are you willing to sit down with me and smoke a peace pipe?

I really do appreciate this post. I have understood that for sometime but am glad you acknowledged it.  This topic didn't have a single thing to do with rotten teenagers or rotten parents. Self discipline being taught is not a negative.

Most teenagers I know are great kids, some I am  thankful that I didn't and don't have to deal with. Forgetting a lunch or homework dosen't make them rotten kids. Most black people I know or have had an opportunity to interact with are pretty decent people, just like anyone else.  I don't have much time for those that use skin color, poverty etc as an excuse for their personal failures. White, black or anyone else. We have numerous family members that are hispanic ,some very much loved grandchildren.  I do want them here legally and to assimilate enough that they are able to care for themselves. There are those that simply can't and they should be given a helping hand.

However this whole post seems  to be  "Passing Judgement" something you seem to be against.

Yup. It is. Agreed. It is completely 100% passing judgment on someone whom I've never met. And it is completely rude, inconsiderate and by all rights, worthy of banning me from this forum indefinitely. :surrender:
