Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted September 7, 2016 Moderators Posted September 7, 2016 The first commercial passenger service in an airplane took place on January 1, 1914. How many of the following statements about that event are true: 1) It occurred in a Benoist XIV Biplane built as a passenger aircraft. 2) It flew at a maximum speed of 64 MPH, between St. Petersburg, Florida across the bay to Tampa, Florida. 3) It was limited to one pilot and one passenger who weighed less than 200 lbs. 4) During the flight engine problems developed and the aircraft had to land on the water. (It was an airboat.) The engine was fixed and the flight continued to Tampa. 5) It took off from the St Petersburg--Tampa Airport, which was built for some $3,000 dollars. Costs exceeded estimates and an additional $400 had to be raised to pay for the lighting of the runway. 6) A standard round-trip ticked cost $10 and was expected to take 20 minutes. The initial flight sold for $400 the amount needed for the runway lighting. 7) Some 106 Benoist XIV aircraft were built for the commercial passenger market. With the passage of time this aircraft was used in anti-submarine warfare. 8) Will Rogers was among the some 3,000 people that watched initial departure. Some 3,500 were on hand to see it land. 9) The Governor of Florida was the passenger on the initial flight. How well do you know your aviation history? You probably know about the Wright Brothers? But, can you answer this question. If you say that all of the above are ture, you will be wrong. They are not all true. Quote Gregory

Outta Here Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Sorry, Gregory. I just don't have any knowledge whatsoever of aviation history (save for the one bit of knowledge that the Wright Brothers are contested as the first in flight by many in Brazil--who insist that Alberto Santos-Dumont was first).
