The single cell bacterium Escherichia coli, which lives in the human intestinal tract contains one chromosome.  That chromosome contains some 5,000,000 (5-million)  base pairs, which make up some 4,300 genes.

The human cell contains some 46 chromosomes, in its nucleus,  which together contain some 3,000,000,000 (3-billion) base pairs.   These base pairs establish the genetic differences that identify each of us as a unique person.

It is this complexity of human life that contributes, in part, to our differences. 

Think about this for a moment.

NOTE:  I have attempted to make the above statement as to human cells consistent with information obtained from the Human Genome Project.
