Here's a funny thing...

This Sabbath we are having a guest speaker, he has requested that that Sabbath be designated to be prayer and fasting day. Because he is a guest speaker, our hospitality ladies have organized a potluck. GAH

I am not kidding. :)

For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? Mat. 16:26

Did your guest speaker say that he would pray and fast on Sabbath?  Or, is he only asking that congregational members pray and fast?

You know that there is an ancient monastic tradition in Christianity.  Perhaps your speaker intends to enjoy the food alone, in silent mediation?

At this point in time, I do not consider this to be a cause of major concern.  However, be aware that if he suggests that he plans to, or suggests that others, follow the example of Simeon Stylites who died in 459 AD,  That should be a cause of concern.  So,  you may want to be prepared.

I always learn the most interesting things from you. I had never heard of Simeon Stylites so I had to look him up. Interesting read, especially since he seemed pretty fanatical and yet he preached about not getting too caught up and allowing yourself to get fanatical. And no, I'm fairly certain that isn't going to happen to us on Sabbath. :)

Simeon (I thought it was Simon...) Stylites- isn't he the guy who sat way up on a pole for a LONG time?

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

One of the best things about  Sabbath Feedings at Church is eating someone else's  cooking.

And they love my food too!

A Love Fest on both sides!

If your picture of God is starting to feel too good to be true, you're starting to move in the right direction. :candle:

There are some that need to eat. Children, the elderly and diabetics. A lot of us adults can probably get by without having a meal it they are prepared to do so. But I know that in some churches, Sabbath fellowship is the best  well rounded meal due to finances. At the church I am currently attending, they have a food pantry, and they also have a meal prepared for the recipients .

Personally, if there is to be a fellowship dinner, I will leave the house without breakfast.

I must say at the OP my first initial reaction was the man is about control and put off by it. Some people can fast at a drop of a hat announcement..others uhh not so much.

If the announcement was before the Sabbath or somehow grapevined it would be more respectful.

This is so ridiculous and awkward...fasting cause He is speaking? Not inspiring others  to Fast with him  in Sermon just giving a request at the beginning?

Moved by GOD?

who knows

Nice thing is when people see things as they really are they are.. not their to take requests like some Wedding DJ

But to go on as planned for people opting out of his suggestion

It wasn't a COMMAND after all.

But alas peer church pressure can be very persuasive altogether voiding God's character of not lording over  peoples own spiritual walk and the most personal decisions.

If that the case- put in some ear buds  ..it can get worse  in whatever else comes out of his mouth:D

#  another stranger delusional of his place in others lives?

I was just enjoying the irony of the situation, I didn't put much thought into it as some of y'all did. I'm guessing it all went well, we didn't stay for the second service.
