Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted November 4, 2016 Moderators Posted November 4, 2016 The following link contains multiple links on which one may click to obtain information about Desmond Doss who was awarded the Medal of Honor. http://www.desmonddoss.com/bio/ However, I have noted two (2) items of information that are false: 1) It states that Doss enlisted in the U.S. Army. Doss did not enlist. He entered the Army under the Selective Service System when he was drafted. NOTE: 11/14/2016 I may be wrong about this. 2) It states that Doss was the only person who fought during WW II and did not carry a weapon. This statement fails to distinguish between a non-combatant and a conscientious objector (CO). Doss was a CO. Under the provisions of the Geneva Conventions military chaplains are all non-combatants. It is a major violation of those conventions for a military chaplain to engage in the use of weapons and if such happens, could result in punitive action against that chaplain. During WW II a Roman Catholic priest was awarded the Medal of Honor for his life-saving actions. He was a non-combatant. It cannot be said that he was a CO. Quote Gregory

Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted November 4, 2016 Author Moderators Posted November 4, 2016 These statements have been made and repeated in multiple posts and documents. I have contacted appropriate people, as I have become aware of such in attempts to have corrections made. At this time, my success rate in unknown. E.G. I just learned of the source I cited in the OP today. I have sent them an e-mail. but they may not even have read it. In another case, and where I supplied documentation of my statement, the denominational official who made the incorrect statement has neither corrected his statement nor responded to me. NOTE: I have attempted not to nit-pick inconsequential statements that may be partially correct and partially incorrect. Some of these are showing up. In one recent post I picked up several such but as they were essentially minor, I did not attempt to correct them. E.G. The official name for the medal that Doss was given is Medal of Honor. That medal is awarded by the Congress of the United States. While it is popularly called the Congressional Medal of Honor, that is not its formal name. Also, in formal military nomenclature, Doss did not earn the Medal of Honor. He was awarded it. Se what I mean by minor nit-picking. Quote Gregory
Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted November 4, 2016 Moderators Posted November 4, 2016 Too many writers of this day and age have no understanding of the Selective Service system which was in place in the '40s. In those days, volunteer soldiers were few and far between; most men were drafted as soon as they became eligible (after age 18 if they were not full-time students or otherwise deferred). I've heard it said today that what we need right now in this country is to reinstate the draft -- not for fighting a war, but for training young men in the art of working together, and for projects like rebuilding our infrastructure across this nation, e.g. --to teach self-discipline. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted November 5, 2016 Author Moderators Posted November 5, 2016 As an interesting note: 1) The draft has been abolished and it would take an act of Congress to establish the drift again. 2) However, the Selective Service has not been abolished. All males are still required to register with Selective Service when they reach the age of 18. Females are not required to register. Quote Gregory

I have not seen the movie yet. Is there a way I can see it in Canada? If the answer to that question has been answered somewhere on the forum, forgive me. I am unable to keep up with things right now. One thing that really intrigues and interests me about this movie is that Adventists and Catholics have worked together on a pretty big project together, The isolationsist, polarizing view of the so called "Friendly Atheist," on this movie is just plain not right. It does not leave me with what feels like "friendly" feelings..Anyways; I have a credi card ready to buy the movie if someone tells me where, or is there a way to watch it here in Alberta? As i watched the final scenes of Doss's unit battling and being victorious because they wanted to be a part of Doss's miracle and have his courage.. i was squicked how his faith was being used in the story. God is there at every peace treaty signing and in every horrible battle... he is working at all times in all places... and every conflict has it 's place in the great story of the battle between good and evil. we are just human and we require supernatural intervention to comprehend God, and hear God and to do His will. I find that very odd. One's faith can have a tremendous impact on others, and motivate them. I see nothing immoral or revolting about that... Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted November 11, 2016 Members Posted November 11, 2016 sometimes the faith of others is needed to galvanize the actionable faith of others... I see nothing wrong with that. Not everyone has the same measure of faith. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup.
