A SDA Should See the Movie Hacksaw Ridge?

In the above, an SDA explains his thinking about Doss and why he recommends that SDAs view the R rated movie which is violent.

I personally agree that it should be seen by SDA members.

1)  As a society we send our men and women into battle  in armed combat.  Few, (American SDAs) outside of those who have actually served in combat, know what war is like.   NOTE:  Yes there are people who have lived in a combat zone and have experienced it.  I believe that viewing this film will give some context to our society when we consider sending our men and women into battle.

2)  To understand what Doss did, we must understand the conditions under which he served in both battle and in his training.  This must not be sugar-coated.

3)  The HR film  centers the actions of Doss in his faith and practice.  We sometimes need to review the life of one who lived their faith.

Well, another person joined us and the five of us went to see the  film.

All were glad that they had seen it.  I think that it is an excellent film.

The early showing was probably about 90% sold out.  We were told that the last showing yesterday was sold out and some could not purchase tickets.

There appeared to me to have a substantial number of veterans in the audience along with their families.

The film correctly stated that Doss was exempt from being drafted. But, it then states that he did enlist, as opposed to my statement that he gave up his exemption and enlisted.  Perhaps (?) I was wrong on that point.

In any case, my understanding of events suggests to me that the film was substantially accurate, with perhaps minor blend.  E.G.  It is known that three of the person who abused him in his early training were in the film combined into the character of one person.

It should be noted that the interviews of Doss and others who knew him were taken from the documentary The Conscientious Objector. 

For more I will suggest that people obtain that documentary.  By the way HOPE TV showed it earlier today so may be showing it later.  Unfortunately, If you have Direct TV, that showing by Hope was entitled :Family Reunion.

I watched it and there were many sda's there that i knew.   It was moving, and  He was shown to be utterly strengthened by God, through his faith in prayer.  And i am certain those around him were touched by His faith.

 It was the Sunday noon matinee and this was maybe the  fourth or fifth showing.  The theater room was not half full, and there were persons giving away  the original booklet on The Doss story, with end comments by Doug Batchelor.

Yes, we went to the Sunday matinee, which began at 11:15.  The theatre to which we went had scheduled three additional showing today.

I had seen a documentary by, I believe Steve Wolhberg, that stated that fact! I was gonna mention that before, but decided not to.

the battlefield scenes were graphic as Mel Gibson is very adept at recreating.  I looked away for much that part of it. it was very touching when he aided a  wounded Japanese soldier.

This weekend, HR brought in some $14,750,000 in income.  I had hoped for 20 million.  We shall see how it continues to do.

In any case, HR placed 3rd in gross income this weekend.

The top two were Dr. Strange followed by Trolls.

The project was in development hell for 14 years.^[4] Numerous producers had tried for decades to film Doss' story, including decorated war hero Audie Murphy and Hal B. Wallis (producer of Casablanca).^[5] In 2001, after finally convincing Doss that making a movie on his remarkable life was the right thing to do, screenwriter/producer Gregory Crosby (grandson of Bing Crosby) wrote a treatment and brought the project to film producer David Permut through the efforts of Stan Jensen of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.^[4] In 2004, director Terry Benedict won the rights to make a 2004 documentary about Doss and secured dramatic rights in the process. However, Doss died in 2006, after which producer Bill Mechanic acquired and then sold the rights to Walden Media, which developed the project along with producer David Permut of Permut Presentations.^[6] Co-producers of the film are Gregory Crosby and Steve Longi. ^[7] Walden Media insisted on a PG-13 version of the battle, then Mechanic spent years working to buy the rights back.^[5][8] After acquiring the rights, Mechanic approached Mel Gibson and wanted him to blend the concoction of violence and faith as he did with The Passion of the Christ (2004). But Gibson turned down the offer twice as he prevously did with Braveheart (1995).^[9]Then almost a decade later, Gibson finally agreed to helm the film on November 2014. The same month Andrew Garfield was also confirmed to play the role of Desmond Doss.^[6]

Dr Strange was weird. I nearly slept through it. For me there was no comparison.

Haven't had a chance to convince anyone to see this with me. All my movie-going friends are only interested in super-hero movies and sci-fi thrillers.  Anyone want to fly to St. Louis and watch with me?

He was faithful, and the Lord was faithful to sustain him.  this is a great story, a demonstration of faith and God working.

God often acts in a time of great stress.  I believe that is what happened with Doss.

WW II was a time when many SDAs were convicted of crimes and sentenced to prison for the stand that they took on the Sabbath and for refusing to bear weapons.

Following the award to Doss of the Medal of Honor:

*  Persons convicted of such crimes were released from prison.

* Conscientious Objectors became more accepted in the military.

*  Senior Army Chaplains formally meet with leaders of the General Conference and pled with them to allow SDA clergy to become military chaplains.  That led to the GC agreeing to such.

 

NOTE:  The story of SDA Clergy becoming military chaplains is interesting to say the least.  Bob Mole was one of the first such.  When the SDA denomination formally allowed him to become a Navy chaplain, they made a very interesting request.  The SDA denomination requested that the Navy give him bad assignments so that he would not stay beyond his initial three (3) year commitment.  Chaplain Mole remained a Navy chaplain for 23 years.  During that time he was awarded 12 medals and decorations including the Bronze Star with "v" for valor.  Prior to becoming a Navy chaplain, he served as a missionary in Lebanon and Cyprus.

I watched the movie, streaming video on the net. Desmond Doss was featured in it Have no idea if it was produced or directed by Mel Gibson.
