Finding Jesus

Finding Jesus is best  known as a 6-segment series shown on CNN.  The Internet contains much on this series to include a book sold on Amazon and in other websites.  CNN recently broadcast the series near Christmas.  I recorded the series and this morning I viewed one.

I have not viewed the other five.  I suspect that there will be those here in CA who will not have positive views on this series as they will possibly consider some of the segments to not be Biblical.

However, based upon my viewing one segment, I will suggest that there is value  in what it tells us about history and the time of Christ.

The segment that I viewed this morning was The Search for the True Cross.  It deals with the considerable number of churches that claim to possess a fragment of the actual cross upon which Christ was crucified.  It should be noted that John Calvin, in commenting on this, stated that if all of these fragments were gathered together, they would fill an entire ship.  The following are some of the aspects of this segment that I found to be interesting:

*  In the beginning of the reign of Constantine Rome was pagan to the extent that any person found to be Christian was imprisoned.

*  As is well known Constantine "converted" to Christianity in 325 AD.  With his change in religion Christianity became legal and some 10% of the citizens converted but 90% remained pagan.

*  What is probably little known is that Constantine's conversion, his life left something to be desired.  In and around 326 AD he had a son and a 2nd wife killed.   The killing of his 2nd wife amounted to extensive torture.

*  In 327 AD, Constantine's mother, Helena, embarked to a mission to search for the cross of Christ.  As a result of that mission, Helena established many places for Christians to worship (churches).   The Christian Church today, according to CNN is indebted to her for this.

*  In this segment, a minute piece of probably the most famous alleged fragment of the cross of Christ is subjected to Carbon-14 dating.  That dating established the age of that fragment to date to about 1100 AD.  So, obviously it was not a fragment of the actual cross.

This comment is just a brief  comment.  But, I suggest that you might find it of interest to look into viewing and/or reading about this series.

From my understanding, carbon-14 dating has to assume the process has always been and will be without variation in order for it to reliably pinpoint past times and events.

For this process to take place, on this specific sample, one has to assume that variation has not occurred in the past 1,100 years.  No assumption has to be made on this sample as to the past 10,000 year of 20,000 years, etc.

For one to suggest that variation had occurred in the past 1,100 years would simply present them as not understanding the issues.
