Techno Sins

Is it a sin to disconnect your USB Mass Storage Device without permission and will your computer be sent crashing to hades if it is done? Is there any forgiveness for sins of ignorance?

It surely must be a sin ... for there is indeed no way of escape from the consequences thereof!! laughhard.giflaughhard.gif

If you mean a flash drive or a "thumb drive," the answer is "No." It won't cause a crash. It might cause a corruption problem on the flash drive, if the computer was writing to it at the time. It might also cause an application to freeze up, if it was referencing data or files on the flash drive.

It's better to follow procedure. but I've removed my flash drives a few times without thinking. The worst thing that happened was that my word processor closed.

USB devices can be connected and disconnected on the fly without shutting down your computer.

A potential problem may occur if data is being transfered either way. That problem would likely lead to a corrupted file.

I regularly connect and disconnect USB devices, and as long as I am positive that data is not being transmitted in either direction, I have never had a problem.

To be clear: The above is true for times when I am using the USB device to run a program on my computer. I must be certain that the application is closed down. To disconnect in the middle of a running program can cause problems.

The funniest thing about that pic is the little fanny pack with "Lucky" written on it.

It appears Sid has given us an example of a techno sin, this example being a sin on several different levels, the most basic of which include:

1. The posting of such a photo.

2. Hi-jacking this thread.

3. Immodesty, which in this photo at the very least reminds us why clothing is a social requirement.

4. Drunkenness; this Mardi Gras attendee depicted must have been drunk in order to dress this way in public.

Very skillful, Sid! <img src="/ubbtreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
