there buster Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 If you mean a flash drive or a "thumb drive," the answer is "No." It won't cause a crash. It might cause a corruption problem on the flash drive, if the computer was writing to it at the time. It might also cause an application to freeze up, if it was referencing data or files on the flash drive. It's better to follow procedure. but I've removed my flash drives a few times without thinking. The worst thing that happened was that my word processor closed. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted March 10, 2006 Moderators Posted March 10, 2006 USB devices can be connected and disconnected on the fly without shutting down your computer. A potential problem may occur if data is being transfered either way. That problem would likely lead to a corrupted file. I regularly connect and disconnect USB devices, and as long as I am positive that data is not being transmitted in either direction, I have never had a problem. To be clear: The above is true for times when I am using the USB device to run a program on my computer. I must be certain that the application is closed down. To disconnect in the middle of a running program can cause problems. Quote Gregory
