Biblical Distinction Between Killing and Murder

“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Genesis 2:17, KJV

The first time I was reading my Bible through from beginning to end, I came to this verse and was irritated and confused.

The pair of them disobeyed His “…thou shalt not eat of it” but to our punctual understanding of death it appeared that they kept right on living.  Adam lived on 930 years and then ‘died’. This matter brought me to the conclusion that death meant from God’s slant of view something else than an instant time related happening.

The pair of them possessed immortality because they were made in His image.

Did that condition die on the day of disobedience but the residue glow carried on in their bodies until their later day of death in a completed way?

In Genesis we see the lifespan of Patriarchs who lived for hundreds of years.

Then the age span decreased with time until:  Psalm 90:10 “The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.”

The answer to your question, AKA, is that the "day" was reckoned in prophetic time, not a literal 24 hours.  Nor is it reckoned in the more commonly understood formula of time where a day equals a year.  It is reckoned in the other time formula given in 2 Peter 3:8 and six verses before the one you quoted--Psalm 90:4.  God's "day" meant a millennial day; 1000 years.  No human in the Bible is recorded as having lived as a sinner on earth more than 1000 years.  God's sentence of death was meted out just as He had predicted.

Green, please be tolerant as I express my disapproval and disagreement of your posting above this post.

I am still one who accepts Creationism and the use of 24 hours for each of the weekly days described in Genesis (the seventh day as exception).   Yes, later on the noun 'day' had become variable with prophetic meaning as well as a 24 hour meaning. I am not spiritually savvy enough to know the parameters of all of the mind of the Lord.

In the Genesis account the wording expressly stated "for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” I could eventually agree that the view of God held in that case a tapestry of time was including a wider scope to just 24 hours.

At my Bible reading begin I might have been too close to the mental monitor in my reaction that there was no death visible of the two who sinned on that 'day'. God's scope of viewing 'time' from his slant gives lots of future prophesy a rather complicated interpretation. In the Adam/Eve account I see no overlapping correlation of explanation to my problem of thinking, sorry.

I am one who accepts each of those days as a literal day as well, including the seventh--no exception needed.  But when God tells us plainly such things as "each day for a year" or "a day is as a thousand years," He is providing a formula by which to measure prophetic time in a ratio against literal time.  The prophetic times are always based on literal times, and do not replace them.  Creation Week was a literal seven-day period.

In a symbolic or spiritual sense, Adam and Eve died the day they ate the fruit; but their God-pronounced death sentence was literally executed within that prophetic day.  For some, like Moses later on, we know that they were still strong at the time of their death, but died because God said it was time.  I believe this was also the case with the first couple, for they had enjoyed the fruit of the Tree of Life and could have lived forever had they been permitted to continue eating of it.  Because God did not want an immortal sinner, they were sent out of the Garden.

Honey, are you lecturing me on something you think I don't know?

It can very well be that the Adam/Eve couple experienced a dimension of death beginning on the very day they ate of the fruit. God said they would.

We don't have all the insightful answers pertaining to the metaphysics governing the garden of Eden crisis occurance

We are all well aware of God working on 6 days and resting from work on the 7th.

That is what I mean when saying the 7th is an exception.
