In A Coma & Aware

The following contains raw language not normally allowed in Club Adventist posts.  If you will object to such language, please do not click on the link.

People often wonder the extent to which people who are in a coma are aware of what is going on in the mind of the person.  The following is a report of a teen-age male who was in a coma for 30 days.  It is his report of what was going on in his mind during that 30 day period and of the events that happened as he came out of the coma.

Jeffrey Johnston is a close relative of mine.  At about the age of 15, he sustained a traumatic brain injury that was expected to result in his death, or at best in his being a vegetable.  But, against all odds, he woke up.  He spent the next 20 years in rehab, and 10 years of this was in a wheel chair.  He now is a runner, has a MA degree, is employed by the State of California, is an accomplished photographer with an Internet presence and a writer.

During much of that time in the coma he shared the room with a Hispanic person who had female relative visiting him around the clock and who spoke often to Jeffrey, in Spanish. As a result, when Jeffrey woke up, he had learned to speak some Spanish.

Again, his language is raw.  If you do not wish to be offended, do not click on the URL.

I thought I recognized the name. You've posted his photos before, because I've seen a lot of them. That first link was pretty awesome for sure. I've heard about people waking up from comas and then saying they remembered stuff, like people talking to them, etc.

As I write this, Jeffrey is sitting in my home.  I have printed this thread off and given it to him along with the URL.  So, He will probably visit this thread and read anything that you may post  here.

Jeffery has a good eye for photography, compositions, points of view, and resolution are awesome. If he knows Adobe Photoshop, maybe he will join us on this forum somewhere in the appropriate section, and help me out a bit, as I am trying to learn it.

Wanderer, I hate to say this, but PS is not something that you can just learn that way! I worked in printing for 42 years and in '85 when we started working with computers, I worked with PS for many years. I stopped working in printing in '08 so its been a few years, and PSs gotten bigger, better and more complicated since I worked with it. What I'm trying to say, and not that great, I needed hands on experience to learn.

This guy is incredible!

His Story makes me shudder and  just don't know what to say.

I'm speechless but one thing I can form in my head to express in the typed word is ...

When I read a well written account of someone's experience I am there with it and feel all the frustration and perplexity given.

I can get lost in a story and reflect about it for weeks if not years.

The only relief in this was that dear Spanish speaking lady ..soothing you like she understood.

I waited for her to come back again and again.

............................

And i love the photos esp the nature ones.

You have a beautiful eye that matches your soul.

And I admire your perseverance and love of life!

I can see Gregory Mathews is proud of you for good reason.

:)

I am proud of both Jeffrey and of his mother.  They have both come a very long ways.  There are parts of their stories that are hard to believe.  But, they are truth.

I will give you just a glimmer of a background that I have not posted about.  It should be noted that my sister is quite open about her life.

Jeff's  Father and Mother married at 19 & 20 years of age.  Probably neither were prepared for marriage and the two sons that became a part of their life.  In addition to everything else, finances were very short.  Then a relative died and Jeff's Father received a small inheritance.  They invested it in his education and he became an executive of a large bank.    It should be noted that Jeff's brother is an executive of a bank here in California, as was his Father.

In the process alcohol became a part of the picture, the marriage ended and Jeff had his traumatic brain injury.  Both Jeff's Mother and Father united    in giving Jeff the care that he needed for some 20 years!

During this time, there were times when Jeff had to experience some very tough love.  That is what it sometimes takes and it was successful.

Jeff has written a book which contains the experiences of a number of people, many,  but not all, are about his life, which has been published by Amazon. and I have previously mentioned it in this forum.

https://www.amazon.com/Walls-Could-Write-Other-Stories-ebook/dp/B00HX9JJR6/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1487594496&sr=8-9&keywords=Jeffrey+Johnston

He is now preparing another book which is the story of his life and is expected to contain much more than did the first.  It is expected to be quite open.
