How disaster-prepared are you?

Have you made any disaster preparations for your household?

Have you got earthquake insurance? Flood? Have you got your family photos where you can quickly grab them and go?

Are you like the Mormons, with a year's supply of provisions?

Not very.  Oh, we have food enough for a few months as everything we eat is cooked from scratch so we have a lot of bulk food.  But prepared?  No.  We rely on electricy to cook.  The electricity goes out there goes all food preparation.   If the water supply of the town goes kaput so does ours. 

To be really prepared a person needs to live on enough acreage outside of town that their home is not visible from the road, and they have timber they can fall for for firewood for cooking and heat, and that requires a wood cookstove which is a very rare thing anymore.  They need their water supply to be driven by a windmill.  They need a couple of mules to drag the wood they cut back to the house because gas will be next to impossible to find, and to plow their garden space.  They need crosscut saws, the hand powered type, axes, hatchets, and the like.  They basically need to be able to survive long term off the power grid.  To do that you need to live as rural people did back in the 1800's before electricity came along. 

I do not think very many people have those skills any more.
