The following is extracted from the above article and in a brief form in which names have been changed. Sally purchased a lottery ticket from Joe's Grocery. Sally refused to pay for the purchased ticket due to it not being exactly what she wanted. Joe placed the rejected ticket on a shelf and hopes to sell it to another person. On Sunday Ruth sees the unsold ticket and notes that it has won some $12,400,000! So, Ruth deposits the $5 purchase price in the register and claims the winnings. Joe files an action in circuit court and claims ownership of the winnings due to ownership at the time the winnings were declared. After some legal wrangling the case is ordered to trial.
