Dr. Shane Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 "And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely." Rev. 22:17 The church is to work with the Spirit. The Spirit does not do its job alone but works with the church. "And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, [:"red"]All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen." [/]Matt. 28:18-20 [:"red"] "Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. David Koot Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Yes, this is all good material, Shane. What is your purpose in posting it? Is there a particular point of discussion? Quote
Dr. Shane Posted March 29, 2006 Author Posted March 29, 2006 It is an honor to work in cooperation with the Spirit of God. Sometimes we hear excuses of people not wanting to "push" their beliefs on others. They claim they are not going to do the Holy Spirit's job for Him. This excuse is also used when people do not want to rebuke those trapped in sin (although that is not the focus of this thread). Revelation 22:17 is such a wonderful calling of the lost to Christ. "whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely" It reminds me of the king's wedding. "Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage." (Matt. 22:9). We, the church must play our role. The Holy Spirit is not going to do the job without us. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
David Koot Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Ahhh, I see. Yes, what you say is true, Shane. God reaches people through us. We need to appeal to people in Christ's name, to be reconciled to God. It is indeed, a cooperative work, and a great privilege. Dave Quote
Nicodema Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Interesting turn of phrase, Shane: "rebuke those trapped in sin". It makes me think of a mouse caught in a trap. Now, how does castigating the mouse aid in this situation? The mouse knows he is caught. It hurts. It's painful. Rather than "rebuke" him, don't you think it would be more effective just to lift the spring and let him go free? Maybe dress the wound on his tail so it will heal more effectively? And while we're at it, supply him with a little cheese so he won't go looking for it in "all the wrong" (dangerous) places, thus risking ensnarement again? Jesus said He was anointed to preach good news to the captives -- not rebuke them. ("Captives" are those caught in a TRAP -- sin, bondage, whatever). Nothing like a trap to give one perspective.... I do agree in large part to your conclusion, Nico, however just as one shoe does not fit every foot, one method does not serve to meet the needs of every miscreant. [:"red"] "I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths." melvin mccarty Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Shane, to my mind your first post on this thread illustrates the confusion this topic creates. You wrote "The Spirit does not do IT'S job alone....." Why the impersonal pronoun? And in Acts 1:8 it is reasonable to conclude that "power" equals "spirit" We see this kind of thing on any discussion of this nature. No wonder it took a few centuries to formulate a doctrine! mel Quote

I would like to focus more on evangelism and cooperating with the Holy Spirit in that endevour but rebuke is somewhat related to it. To answer the question, in the spirit of Hermie the catapillar...
