Fidget Spinners

I don't know where I have been, but a new craze has come along, i.e., the fidget spinner! Even
walked past shopping carts full of them at WalMart and even the recommended items on Amazon. But now
even I have one after seeing the following video:

Seems your fidget spinners are OK on the Sabbath as long as they are of the variety that do not have
lights in them!

That last link was interesting indeed. My grandsons both have started collecting them. They also have the lighted ones too!! It's interesting how my Jewish brothers and sisters think that by having lights turned on, it means that its work!! What I'm guessing is that when turning lights on, it needs energy, which is true, but so is moving your body!! So I guess it's better that we don't move around on the Sabbath??

My former brother-in-law was an Orthodox Rabbi. I visited him one time when his little boy was less than two years old. Somehow, little boy had gotten a hold of the radio and turned it on to some rock station on the Sabbath! He was unable to turn off the radio because it would be breaking the Sabbath. So, he and the rest of his family listened to rock music until the sun went down!

I was in a Jewish bookstore once in Squirrel Hill (Pittsburgh), and the books were mostly for the orthodox. I checked out one book which was basically titled "39 classes of things you cannot do on the sabbath". The one item that stuck in my memory was, if a book has writing on the edges of the book, you may not open the book on the Sabbath day because it is a form of erasure.

Restrictions on Sabbath day activities are mentioned in the Gospels when it talked about a Sabbath days journey. I forget the distance, but there is an acceptable distance to travel on the Sabbath. In some Jewish sections of big cities such as Squirrel Hill in Pittsburgh, eruvim are established by red wires around a part of the city in a completed circle. That space is reclassified and people may walk further to shul within the eruvim. These wires are said to be checked every Friday for being intact.

I remember a sort of Sabbath day restriction on travel for SDAs. You were limited the driving that can be done on one tank of gas!
