Bear Attacks at SDA Camp

The following is taken from an official release from the Rocky Mountain conference, today., July 9, 2017.

 

Bear Incident at Glacier View Ranch  »  On Sunday, July 9, at around 4:00 a.m., a bear attack took place on center campus lakefront at Glacier View Ranch in Boulder County. The incident involved a staff member and campers were not threatened or involved at any time. A bear wandered into the main area of campus where several staff members were sleeping. Unprovoked, the bear proceeded to attack one staff member. He is currently stable and resting comfortably.   The on-campus medical team responded immediately and stabilized the staff member while the camp directors contacted emergency personnel. Lefthand Fire Department, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, EMS and the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife were immediately notified and responded.
   The staff member was transported by EMS to Boulder for medical treatment and there is no danger to his life. After treatment, the counselor returned to the came.
   During the attack, other staff members present followed their training and diffused the situation before the bear could cause further harm. Staff and directors at GVR took appropriate actions and are cooperating with the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife to track and remove the bear from the area.
   Summer camp program will continue as normal and we’re looking forward to our final week of camp with nearly 100 teen campers from July 9 to July 16, 2017.
   Due to its location in the mountains, just several miles from Rocky Mountain National Park, we anticipate contact with various wildlife throughout the summer camp season. As such, we train our staff for contact, interaction and incidents with wildlife including moose, wild cats and bears.
   Glacier View Ranch is a Christian Retreat Center and Summer Camp in the Rocky Mountains, established in 1949. For the past several decades, each summer, staff from all over the country come to GVR to conduct seven weeks of summer camp for campers ages 7-18. Campers experience a week of life in the Rocky Mountains just outside of Boulder, Colorado and participate in various activities from horseback riding and swimming to team sports and arts & crafts while enjoying wholesome Christian programming.
