How it was that men, women, and children were held in bondage after Francis Scott Key wrote the famous words, "land of the free, and the home of the brave" in 1812? How segregation persisted in law until the late 1960s?

I believe that the North, particularly Rhode Island, was still trading in slaves in 1791 since the slave trade was only outlawed in 1808. Just prior to the great American Civil War, merchants in New York City were still favorable to the Southern states due to the cotton trade.

It took the Civil War to begin to end the system of second-class citizenship in the U.S., a war in which my great-grandfather and my great-great grandfather on my father's side died fighting for the Northern cause (one in the Battle of the Wilderness and the other of injuries received in the Battle of Ball's Bluff).

I'm not sure that we still have the true freedom envisioned by the U.S. founders due to the system of political correctness that has grown up. And, of course, human slavery is still in existence.  Human trafficking is proof of that.

A number of the questions that have been asked here may be answered by the 3rd chapter in the book listed below. This chapter was titled "Tension between the Races" and written by Norman. Miles.  In is on pages 46 - 60 of the following book:

Gary Land, Editor. The World of Ellen G. White. Revciew & Herald. 1987, 253 pages.

Comments from that chapter, stated in my terms include:

*  A discussion of the role that clergy played in the issue on Race Relations.

*  By 12/1863 there were some 20,830 Black volunteers who had enlisted in the Union Army.

*  Those Black enlisted soldiers were paid 1/2 the pay of a White soldier.

*  The Federal Constitution was amended three (3) times between 1866 & 1870 to grant rights to Blacks.

*  The 13th Amendment abolished slavery.

*  The 14th Amendment granted citizenship.

*  The 15th Amendment granted sufferage.  

*  Between 1866 & 1875 Congress passed four (4) different laws granting specific rights.

*  The laws that were put in place to deprive Blacks are of interest.

*  Booker T. Washington and the Atlanta Compromise is of interest.
