If you have any items to add; please include them below. (I hope I picked the right forum for this topic). Jesus Walks On Water? Friday, April 7th, 2006, I read an article in our local newspaper which basically challenged the Biblical assertion that Jesus walked on water. (Mat.14:24-30) One, Doron Nof, a University of Florida Professor of oceanography states that “a rare combination of water and atmospheric conditions in The Sea of Galilee, 2000 years ago, may offer a scientific explanation for one of the miracles recounted in the Bible." “ A patch of ice, floating in the sea of Galilee would have been difficult to distinguish from [any] unfrozen water surrounding it." Nor’s “research” appears in the April, 2006 issue of the Journal Of Paleolimnology, a publication on the reconstruction of lake histories. Of course, co-authors are also “specialist experts” such as biostatistics Professor, Ian McKeague of Columbia University; and atmospheric science professor, Nathan Paldor of Hebrew University of Jerusalem. I noticed in vs. 24 that the Bible states there were definite waves in the sea; and my 11 year old son observed, when he heard this story: “How could Jesus have walked on water, when Peter sank like that, right in front of Him?” “He wouldn’t sink if there was ice there; would he Dad?” What do other forum members think? Ted Oplinger Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Hmmm....if there was that much ice on the Sea of Galilee for Christ to walk on, combined with the wind and waves noted in the Scriptures...the wooden fishing boats of those days would not have withstood the crushing impacts of blocks of lake ice into them. They would have sunk long before Jesus reached them. That much ice for Jesus to walk on...measurably faster than the boats' ability to travel against wind and waves...would hardly have been invisible and unnoticed by those fishermen. Likewise, if it was ice...the disciples would not have spoken of Peter walking on water, but rather on ice, to meet Jesus outside the boat. Walking on walkable ice, though, does not take a great measure of spiritual faith - and Jesus need not of chided Peter for a lack of faith when he sank. For not watching his step, yes, but not for lack of faith. Bevin, you're right on this one: those scientists don't have anything solid to stand on, when they imply that Jesus did.... No prejudice intended; except for a little bit of "natural" bias. There are a number of items we could discuss here; just various views about Jesus I am seeing out there, in newspapers, magazines; etc. Another astounding case is something being dubbed as "The Gospel Of Judas," an (apparently) "new" 1600 year old papyrus document portraying Judas as a hero...I have a newspaper article here about it which I will review briefly in the next post here.
