Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted October 9, 2017 Author Moderators Posted October 9, 2017 As a 2nd question: Which one of the foods listed above was declared by a decision of the United States Supreme Court to be one of the listed categories listed above which differs from the category that it is assigned by scientists? Outta Here Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 As to the question, I'd guess tomato, but it's not on the list. Isn't a drupe a fruit? Also, what is chicle? Is that what chicklets gum is made of? Quote
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted October 9, 2017 Author Moderators Posted October 9, 2017 Tomato: Yes, it is a fruit. However, in an 1893 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that under the law that was being considered, the tomato was a vegetable. So, due to that decisions, all tomatoes that are imported into the U.S. are vegetables. By the way, you caught my error. I intended to place tomato on the list, but I forgot to do so. Chicle: Yes, that is a part of chewing gum. But, it is also a very tasty tropical fruit. Chicle fruit does have other names and it grows on the Sapadilla tree, which is also called the Manilkara Zapota. Drupe: No, by its technical definition a drupe is not a fruit. So, which of the listed foods are drupes? Quote Gregory
Outta Here Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Cherries, plums, peaches, avocado, walnuts, almonds, pecans, coconut, blackberry, raspberry, apricot, nectarine, coffee, jujube, mango, olives, dates, pistachio, damson, hickory... Quote
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted October 9, 2017 Author Moderators Posted October 9, 2017 And the cashew is a drupe. Can you name other drupes on the list? Quote Gregory

They are related to Poison Ivy; and their "skin" and leaves will produce a similar reaction. You will never find "cashews in the shell" at a grocery or health food store. Quote
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted October 9, 2017 Author Moderators Posted October 9, 2017 JoeMo: What you said applies to a raw cashew. In the U.S. it is illegal to sell raw cashews. What you see in a grocery store that is called a raw cashew, actually has been partially roasted to drive out the oil that blisters the skin when it is eaten. How do I know? I lived in Panama where I could pick cashews directly off of the tree. And I could purchase cashews from roadside stands, that sometimes had not roasted them enough to drive out the oil that blistered the skin. NOTE: There are tropical fruits that are very dangerous to eat, either at the wrong stage of their development, or that had not been properly treated as with the cashew. Quote Gregory

But I can name all the things on the list that we don't eat at home because my husband is allergic to them: cashew, chicle, hazelnut, farro, spelt, emmer, walnut, artichoke, peas. So that leaves only amaranth, cherry and plum that I need worry about which categories...grain, drupe and drupe. LOL Quote
