People sometimes wonder where they can co to obtain additional educational experiences at a low cost and in a context that fits their current life situation.  Actually there are many sources of such, for people who may not need formal academic recognition.

*  Local so-called Jr. Colleges should not be ignored.  They may (?) offer free courses to older people.  They often have reduced rated.  They will often have courses that can be taken in the evening and on week-ends.

*  Major U.S. Universities may have on-line educational opportunities at little to no cost.

*  The Teaching Company, through its Great Courses Division is a major supplier of digital learning material.  I will comment on this more in a later post.

Don't forget iTunes University. However, Apple says it was going to only an iPhone/iPad platform, but I seem to be able to get it on my computer. They even have Loma Linda Univ courses on there.

The Teaching Company through its Great Courses Division is a major supplier digital learning material for a wide-variety of subjects.  Their course work is presented by well known, established people who have made a name for themselves in their field.  Their coursework can often be obtained in several formats depending on what you want to pay for it.  Their list prices for  their materials may seem to be quite high.  However, they are always having a sale.  Those sales can be as much as 70% to 80 % off of the list price.  

I checked with them today and their catalogue lists 665 available courses and of those 490 are of sale at some reduction in price even if not the 70% to 80% that I mentioned above.  If you are on their mailing list, you may receive catalogues that offer discounts that are not listed on their website.

I have a current catalogue that lists 195 courses on sale at  80% off of the list price.  Of those, 45 are listed at less than $25.  This catalogue gives an additional 20% any order that exceeds $100.

Individual courses, with different prices, may be offered at: DVD, Video Download, Audio CD, Audio Download. All courses will typically offer free digital streaming and a free book to go along with the course.  Subject matter comes form Science,  Better Living (chess, sewing photography, etc.), Mathmatics,  History and much more.  Individual lectures are typically 30 minutes in length.

Several of the photography courses area taught by National Geographic photographers.

As examples of prices:

1)  A 24 lecture course in Comparative Religion lists for some $254.95  to $129.95, and is on sale for from $24.95 to $14.05, depending on the format,

2) A 40 lecture course on sewing lists for $375.95  to $319.95 but is on sale from $99.95 to $l9.95, again depending on the  format.

 3)  A 60 lecture course on the "Joy of Science" lists for some $624.95 to $209.95 is on sale from $84.95 to $49.95.  

4)  A 12 lecture  course on the 1st Amendment lists for $149.95 to $99.95 is on sale now from $14.95 to $11.95.

My point is:  Whatever your interest, you can likely find something of interest to you and if you wait for a sale, find it at a price you are willing to pay for it.

One of the Great Courses that I have purchased is a 96 lecture course, Understanding the Universe.  The professor is Alex Filippenko.  He has taught at U.S. Berkley and is a past President of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.

This course lists for $800 and is on sale today for $230.

When I purchased it, I waited for a year for it to come on sale at a lower price than I have listed above.  But, it finally did go on sale for a lessor price.

Again:  Whatever your interests and willingness to pay, I believe that you can probably  find something in their lineup that meets your interests.  My thinking is that I do not ever want to stop learning.  At this point in my life, I do not need academic recognition of what I have learned.
