no unemployment benefits on a closed SDA hospital

I was just reading a friend's note on Facebook regarding the recent closing of Walla Walla General Hospital earlier this year.  Apparently, Adventist Health (which owned the facility) did not deduct any unemployment insurance.  So the WWGH employees have had no unemployment benefits.

Apparently, churches have sometimes been exempt from paying that, and haven't collected it from their employees.  From what I understand, there was a tiny window of time in the 1970s where the church could fill out the original tax forms and claim exemption from submitting the unemployment deductions to the State/Feds.

I really feel sorry for those employees.  One family's income was solely dependent upon the husband's WWGH job.  But now they're likely to lose their home and belongings.  It makes me wonder how many other employees of Adventist companies would be likewise affected if another Adventist entity is dissolved.  Would the same thing happen??

It's never so bad it couldn't be worse. I just read a day or two ago of a person in southern California who just purchased a brand new home
