But the potential problems associated with this transplant and the actual situation associated with dialysis should be considered by all prior to making the same situation. I have worked closely with transplant & dialysis patients for a number of years. * There are three (3) as I recall types of dialysis. Only one type requires hospital visits three times a week. Other types can be administered at home by the patient. * With the proper advance preparation the dialysis patient can travel extensively both nationally and internationally to include traveling on cruise ships. It simply takes planning and prior preparation. E.G. We have over the road, long distance truck drivers who are on dialysis and drive their trucks. * Even with 3 times a week hospital visits, dialysis patients can have a life and often employment in their chosen occupation. It can be done. * A transplant patient will likely be required to take anti-rejection drugs. Those will decrease the person's ability to fight infections and often they will be more likely to be hospitalized for those infections. * I have personally seen patients (multiple times) who lived for years on dialysis and died within 12 months after a transplant due the decreased ability to fight infections. * On the other hand, I have seen patients who benefited from a transplant and had a better life. Folks, my point is simply that this is a complex situation in which one can not really predict the benefit that will one will receive from a transplant. On a personal basis, I made the decision some years ago that I would starat from the position that I would NOT undergo a transplant and if needed take dialysis. Quote Gregory
