Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 16, 2017 Moderators Posted December 16, 2017 Yesterday (Thursday), while doing some grocery shopping someone side-swiped the rear of our car while pulling out of their parking space. The driver got out, examined our damage and fled the scene. What they did know was that someone photographed the event and recorded the license number! And waited around to tell my wife. fF you look closely, you will see a major LED light assembly that has been torn loose. The estimate to repair came in at just under $1,700! This is why we have insurance. We are hoping that the police can establish responsibility. Stan and phkrause 2 Quote Gregory
aka Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 That is a bummer! The paid protection of the right kind of car insurance none-the-less gives a bit of mind peace. May our Lord bless that lady who helped by photo taking of the event. A true good Samaritan. phkrause 1 Quote
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 16, 2017 Author Moderators Posted December 16, 2017 Yes. However, the police still have to establish responsibility on a level needed to prove it at trial, if it were to go to that. Our insurance company is working on that also. If the police can establish proof, they can then charge the driver of that vehicle with leaving the scene of an accident. That is serious. phkrause 1 Quote Gregory

Pastor: I truly hope that through the mercy of ELOHIYM, that you are able to find the person. Did the place have a camera of the parking lot? With that much damage, you think someone had to see it and hear it! Insurance is costly enough and not know who hit you. My prayers are with you! Sabbath blessings to you and your family! Quote
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 16, 2017 Author Moderators Posted December 16, 2017 Thank you for your concern. We have a witness and a photo of the vehicle that did the damage. However, for various reasons, that does not mean a level of proof required to take it to trial. The information is in the hands of the police to determine whether or not enough proof exists. IT is also in the hands of our insurance company who is actively investigating from the standpoint of another company being required to pay. As the police told my wife: There is a reason why the driver fled: * Not a legal drivers license. * No insurance. * A warrant for their arrest for some other charge. If the police can identify and establish proof, the driver can be charged with Leaving the scene of an accident which is a major charge. Also, a 2nd charge of a failure to file a report of the accident. But that can only be after the required time limit has expired. California requires a report if either the damage exceeds $1,000 or there is injury, even if slight. As our damage exceeds $1,000, I filed our report yesterday. Quote Gregory

B/W Photodude Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 I usually have always bought used cars. My current car that is the only one I ever drove off the lot brand new became a magnet for these kind of events. Within the first two years of owning the car, I must have had it in the shop five times for these parking lot events including one hit n run. Doesn't happen anymore now that my car is very advanced in age! Been driving that car for 18 years! phkrause 1 Quote >>>Texts in blue type are quotes<<< ***************************************************************************** And therefore as a stranger give it welcome. Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted December 17, 2017 Moderators Posted December 17, 2017 Well, over the period of 60+ years that I've been driving, I've had four or five accidents of that type -- when my car has been legally parked but has been hit by some careless driver. Sometimes I've returned in time to get the name and address of the other driver, but sometimes not. But I never sweat it; I've had the same auto insurance company for the past 50 years, and have always carried Uninsured Motorist coverage. So I always get my car repaired, no questions asked. If the insurance company can, and wants to, subrogate against the "bad guy" or his insurance company, they go ahead and do it; I never need to be involved. One good thing about Uninsured Motorist coverage: there's no deduction for me to pay. So it all gets paid without any input from me. [Of course, the UM coverage itself costs something; but that's just part of the picture.] phkrause and Stan 2 Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 17, 2017 Author Moderators Posted December 17, 2017 Uninsured Motorist: The actual provisions of the policy vary from State to State. Here in California UM only kicks in if there is an identified person who can be demonstrated not to have insurance. IOW, my UM coverage will not apply, unless the driver/owner can be identified and it proven that they do not have insurance. Without that identification, the repair will be covered by my collision policy which has a deductible. If the driver/owner can be identified not to have insurance, my UM will kick in and cover my deductible. By the way, Jeanieb: I also have been licensed for more than 60 years as I got my first drivers license at the age of 14! How many of you were licensed at 14? By the way again: * How many million miles do you think that I have driven? * How many times have I had my driver's license suspended and at what ages? * How many miles have I driven most of the automobiles that I have owned? Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 18, 2017 Author Moderators Posted December 18, 2017 I noticed that. I made a generalized statement. Quote Gregory
