Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 22, 2017 Moderators Posted December 22, 2017 The following article posits that the tests of the atomic bomb carried out in the 1950s in Nevada actually killed a large number of people. B/W Photodude Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 This is so bizarre!I Just received one of my wife's Christmas presents in the mail today. It is depression era green glass. So, what does this have to do with atomic bombs? Depression era green glass has uranium in it! It is a faint green color and glows under a UV light. Some of the green glass is even said to be very radioactive to have around. I am kind of curious if I can even make a photo of it with a pinhole camera over time. Would probably have to be made especially for that with lead sheeting. My wife collects stuff like this (glass type curios), however, this will not be an item which will be used for drinking out of. I do not think it will contaminate food, it will just irradiate you while you drink from it.She won't even use a microwave to heat her food! http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=depression+green+glass+UV+light&go=Search&qs=ds&form=QBILPG Here is another article about using UV to detect forgeries, repairs etc, to antique items: https://www.antique-hq.com/7-tips-to-authenticate-antiques-using-black-uv-light-540/ The following YouTube will give you an idea how serious above ground testing was. We can see numbers for the US, but testing went on extensively in other parts of the world also. A Time-Lapse Map of Every Nuclear Explosion Since 1945 - by Isao Hashimoto Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto has created a beautiful, undeniably scary time-lapse map of the 2053 nuclear explosions which have taken place between 1945 and 1998, beginning with the Manhattan Project's "Trinity" test near Los Alamos and concluding with Pakistan's nuclear tests in May of 1998. This leaves out North Korea's two alleged nuclear tests in this past decade (the legitimacy of both of which is not 100% clear). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLCF7vPanrY Quote >>>Texts in blue type are quotes<<< ***************************************************************************** And therefore as a stranger give it welcome. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted December 22, 2017 Members Posted December 22, 2017 it's not radioactivity that makes some depression glass glow .... it's the natural chemistry of uranium that makes it glow under ultraviolet light. It would glow whether or not the U235 isotope was removed. .....It's cool to find those glass pieces. My Mom and her sister collected it, too. phkrause 1 Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. I would hope it was not the radioactivity making it glow! It would be likely hot and deadly if glowing. And agreed, it is a natural chemistry thing which converts the UV light into the visible spectrum. There are a number of metals which will also do the same thing, but with different colors. But from what I have read, it is the uranium which does it and the one I have would not glow if the uranium suddenly "fell out" of it. I have a UV flashlight and immediately checked for the glow on arrival!
