Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted March 27, 2018 Members Posted March 27, 2018 that's interesting! So the sun is moving ... in a straight line? Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

There are many directions we are all traveling. I found these estimates: To make one complete rotation in 24 hours, a point near the equator of the Earth must move at close to 1000 miles per hour (1600 km/hr). The speed gets less as you move north, but it's still a good clip throughout the United States. How fast does Earth orbit the sun? Earth's spin, of course, is not the only motion we have in space. Our orbital speed around the sun is about 67,000 mph (107,000 km/h),according to Cornell. Yes, the Sun - in fact, our whole solar system - orbits around the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. We are moving at an average velocity of 828,000 km/hr. But even at that high rate, it still takes us about 230 million years to make one complete orbit around the Milky Way! The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. The motion that's left must be the particular motion of our Galaxy through the universe! And how fast is the Milky Way Galaxy moving? The speed turns out to be an astounding 1.3 million miles per hour (2.1 million km/hr)! However, these numbers vary depending on who you are following, but reasonably close. You cannot just add them all up because they may not be in exactly the same direction. As one source said, you would need a lot of trigonometry to figure an exact speed. But I have seen guesses as high as 4 million miles an hour. And I haven't seen anyone weigh in on whether the entire universe is moving! rudywoofs (Pam) 1 Quote >>>Texts in blue type are quotes<<< ***************************************************************************** And therefore as a stranger give it welcome. GayatfootofCross Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 I love this! The more I come across this stuff the more it makes sense to me. Ever growing ever moving universe! Thiss video is kool.... it looks like that We are on our way to see the King! Moderators Bravus Posted March 28, 2018 Moderators Posted March 28, 2018 Definitely a very cool representation! I suspect it's not perfectly accurate, since I think the plane of the ecliptic (the plane in which all the planets orbit our sun (approximately)) is in approximately the same direction as the plane of the galaxy, so the motion of the sun is in the same plane as the motion of the planets... but I could be wrong about that. I'll do some extra checking. As the numbers B/W Photodude shared show, the motion of the sun is not just one thing either, but at least 3 motions... We're in a stunning, complex, enormous universe, that's for sure, and it's great to remind ourselves of that sometimes! GayatfootofCross 1 Quote Truth is important
Moderators Bravus Posted March 28, 2018 Moderators Posted March 28, 2018 It also doesn't mean heliocentrism is 'wrong'... it's just a matter of perspective. And rotational and vortex motion are not 'completely different', either... it's just a matter of perspective (reference frame). I guess that's what happens when a DJ does physics: great music and visuals, some exciting ideas but some small inaccuracies in the wording! Quote Truth is important
Moderators Bravus Posted March 28, 2018 Moderators Posted March 28, 2018 Turns out I'm wrong: the plane of the galaxy is at 60 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic. The Milky Way is the rest of our galaxy, and we see it in the night sky. Quote Truth is important
Moderators Bravus Posted March 28, 2018 Moderators Posted March 28, 2018 Not sure whether I've shared this before: if so it was a long time ago. Just something to give us a sense of perspective: rudywoofs (Pam) and GayatfootofCross 1 1 Quote Truth is important

All the velocities mentioned above the quote above have a point of reference on which to base the relative velocity. The rotation of the earth is relative to the time span between sunsets. The speed of rotation around the sun is relative to the sun. The rotational speed around the galaxy is relative to the center of the galaxy. What is the speed of the galaxy measured in reference to? Velocity is a relative thing based on the reference point of the observer. This is not some childish gibberish. Einstein based his theory of relativity on this philosophical assumption. Quote

Probably other galaxies because all of them are in motion. I haven't seen it in writing yet, but I suspect the entire universe in rotating just like our galaxy rotates. The video link that GayatfootofCross posted provides some information in understanding the motion of the universe. But the fact that the universe is so immense with estimates of a trillion galaxies and each have hundreds of millions of stars, it provides for some very interesting speculation. Just like when you travel around the world, no matter what direction you go in the universe, you will never leave reach the edge and fall off of it even though it is finite in space-time. And like the surface of a ballon when you blow it up, it keeps expanding; but will always remain finite in space-time. You're right. The video Gay posted was amazing! GayatfootofCross 1 Quote
