CA Assembly Bill 2943

The California Assembly has passed bill # 2943 which must be voted by the Senate prior to becomming law. 

In general, the purpose of the bill can be summed up by the quote below.

Some to include, some SDAs, have  jumped on this bill to allege that it potentially violates the rights of Christians to write and speak against homosexuality.  I consider that any idea that clergy would be prohibited by the  bill from  preaching against homosexuality to be false.  I do not beleive that the bill prohibits the sale of the Bible.  Rather, I consider much of what I have read against this bill to be false.

In general, as I understand it,  this bill extends the current prohibition under California law of psychological attempts to change gender orientation to include the commercial advertising of such gender change efforts.  I beleive that it is clear that gender preference is not a choce.  I did not chose to be a heterosexual.  I do not beleive that homosexuality is a choice.  I agree that so called attempts to change ones gender preference often cause harm to the individual.  Notice that this is not license to sexual freedom.  So, do not put words in my mouth that I have not stated.

The bottom line:  If you want to know the truth about this bill, which is not yet law, read it, rather than taking the word of people who may not correctly represent it.

Yes, California Is on the Verge of Banning Some Christian Books, Here’s How

Late last week, I wrote an article that caused a bit of a furious reaction in social-justice Twitter. Activists claimed I was lying, arguing in bad faith, and/or exaggerating the effect of California’s AB 2943, a bill that purports to declare “sexual orientation change efforts” to be an “unlawful business practice.” I claimed the bill was so broad that it could even ban books.

Again, another article/opinion trying its best to stir up righteous indignation when none is needed. The phrase....."with a patient under 18 years of age"  ......as a way of stirring up the gullible. Is it any wonder .org religion continues to get a bad rap? Honesty is lacking!! The bloggers concerns are not really about the Bible being banned, in my opinion, but rather rather just another end run about gay issues. Context, context...that dreaded word by all who rely on text/quote splatter. 

AB 2943, as amended, Low. Unlawful business practices: sexual orientation change efforts.

Existing law, the Consumer Legal Remedies Act, makes unlawful certain unfair methods of competition and unfair or deceptive acts or practices undertaken by any person in a transaction intended to result result,or which results results, in the sale or lease of goods or services to any consumer. Existing law authorizes any consumer who suffers damages as a result of these unlawful practices to bring an action against that person to recover damages, among other things.

Existing law prohibits mental health providers, as defined, from performing sexual orientation change efforts, as specified, with a patient under 18 years of age. Existing law requires a violation of this provision to be considered unprofessional conduct and subjects the provider to discipline by the provider’s licensing entity.

This bill would include, as an unlawful practice prohibited under the Consumer Legal Remedies Act, advertising, offering to engage in, or engaging in sexual orientation change efforts with an individual. The bill would also declare the intent of the Legislature in this regard.
